History: Mrs. Leeds, a resident of Estellville, was distressed when she found out she was expecting her thirteenth child. She screamed, “Let it be the devil!” The child arrived and it was a baby devil. The creature screeched and unfolded its wings and flew out the window and into the swamp. Stories have circulated of the Devil raiding chicken coops and farms, destroying crops, and killing animals. He emerges from his natural lair in the Pinelands and wanders throughout Southern New Jersey, sometimes engaging and sometimes terrorizing the residents, and at one point as much as $100,000 was offered for the capture of the Jersey Devil, dead or alive.
Where it appears: Jersey Devil" is supposed to travel the New Jersey Pinelands and many people have told others of scary encounters on dark nights in the wilderness of the Pines. Devil craze of 1909: Navy Commander Stephen Decatur says he saw the creature and shot it while testing cannonballs at Hanover Mills Works in the Pine Barrens. The cannonball put a hole in the Devil, but it was said to not be fazed. They found strange tracks, but bloodhounds supposedly refused to follow the tracks

10 feet tall and stopping traffic: While traveling on Route 9, three cars were forced to slam on their breaks when according to a witness a ten-foot-tall, Jersey Devil figure with a long head and short flat ears ran across the road.
