Ratliff describes closeness as when two musicians are playing together and the music they're playing works to compliment one another. I definitely agree with what Ratliff is proposing here, I find that if an artist is just working by himself/herself their sound tends to get repetitive as they release more music, but when adding another musician they tend to challenge one another and make their music better. When Ratliff is describing Earl Phillips working with Jimmy Reed and Howlin' Wolf he says Reed adds "Something small and sure enough to give the song its beauty." This further adds to the idea of another musician adding an additional feature to a song, and that feature making the song better. Ratliff uses "Help!" by The Beatles as an excellent example of closeness. Ratliff says how Paul McCartney and John Lennon's voices worked because they "Knew its power." This power used in "Help!" really adds to the theme of needing another person's help. "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins and Philip Bailey is a perfect example of closeness. The two musicians voices work to balance out the song with Collins' voice giving a sort of erratic tone and Bailey's voice has a smooth tone to it. These two very different sounding voices balance each other out perfectly and really demonstrate how these two men had the same experience with this woman they're describing throughout the song.

"They knew its power; they celebrated it, were celebrated for it, could hardly contain it, may have been frightened by it, may have even tried to frighten each other with it," Ben Ratliff (Chapter 14).

"Those who write about music are generally concerned with contrasts, because contrasts seem to be anecdotally measurable," Ben Ratliff (Chapter 14).
