The ancient pagoda was built by King Ly on the land of Thanh Bao village, Quang Duc district, west of the ancient Thang Long imperial citadel. Today the pagoda is located on One Pillar Pagoda street, right next to the Ba Dinh Square - Presidential Mausoleum relic complex in the center of Ba Dinh district, Hanoi.

One Pillar Pagoda is also known by other names such as Mat Pagoda, Dien Huu Pagoda or Lien Hoa Dai Pagoda.

According to ancient history, the pagoda was built by King Ly Thai Tong in the winter of 1049. Ancient legends still preserve the story of King Ly Thai Tong dreaming of seeing Guan Yin Buddha meditating on a bright lotus throne, holding out his hand to lead the king. get on the radio.

When the king woke up from his dream, he built the One Pillar Pagoda with the same architectural style as in a dream. From there, people see a pagoda with a unique column structure, shaped like a lotus rising in the middle of Linh Chieu lake in Thang Long citadel.

The architecture of the One Pillar Pagoda is unique and "one of a kind". The pagoda is shaped like a lotus flower blooming on the water - a flower that symbolizes the purity and nobility of Buddhism. That's why people still call the One Pillar Pagoda Lien Hoa Dai.

The entire pagoda space is placed on a stone pillar under Linh Chieu lake. In fact, the pillar consists of two stone blocks, but they are skillfully connected as one, creating a unique look for the temple's architecture. The pagoda is made of many types of precious wood.

The pagoda's roof is covered with ancient tiles, skillfully designed in the shape of a curved blade with a dragon flanking the moon - also known as "Two dragons flanking the moon" with extremely sophisticated patterns. In temple architecture from ancient times to present, dragons are an indispensable symbol.

This is an image that represents divine authority and is imbued with human values, reflecting human desires and intelligence.
