Examples of Media Bias by Erin marielle Go

Media has a prodigious influence on the way we think, what we do, what we learn, what we think about, and our overall perspective on the whole world.
This is why it's important to understand media bias (and other techniques of media such as agenda-setting) and be aware of it, for bias can often blur the truth and if we don't pay attention, we may be misled.

‘Far Right,’ ‘Hardline’ and ‘Ultra-Conservative’ House GOP:

Bias by labeling
Mr. Rich Noyes’ article illustrates bias by labeling because it mentions the labeling of the Republics in the House of Representatives and the lack of labels put on liberals. Labels include ‘Far Right,’ ‘Hardline’, and ‘Ultra-Conservative’, basically rating how conservative the representatives are, while the article states that “there have been absolutely no references this year to any ‘very liberal’ or ‘ultra-liberal’ Democratic politicians.” In addition, the text states, “[Labels such as ‘far right’ are] something that liberals don’t have to face. There were no such labels of any House Democrats during the four weeks we reviewed.”

Bias by spin / omission
The author illustrates bias by spin in the reports of ABC, CBS, and NBC because these three networks have only been showing one interpretation of the conservatives and the issues in the House of Representatives. As evidence, in the words of Noyes, “network reporters uniformly cast conservatives as the cause of “chaos” in the House of Representatives,” without showing other points of view. They’re solely talking about the conservatives (more specifically the Republicans) and their beliefs and issues, without the inclusion of that of the liberals.
This article could also be illustrating bias by omission, since the three networks have excluded information about the liberals, and how they could be causing the “chaos” ( as Noyes put it ) in the House of Representatives.

Bias by selection of sources
The CNN article is showing bias by selection of sources, since their only source (Mr. Gonzalez, who’s “obsessed with shutting down the religious order Mother Teresa founded”) is supporting that Mother Teresa shouldn’t be as respected and praised as she is. There’s less- more specifically, no support- that supports the view that Mother Teresa should be respected.

Bias by labeling
The article by CNN also shows bias by labeling, since CNN shows Mr. Gonzalez in a more positive air. To illustrate, the author of the article states that “what CNN didn’t tell us about Mr. Gonzalez is quite revealing, and far from complimentary”. The author further states that Mr. Gonzalez’s expression of anti-catholic tirades shows that he is an “anti-religious [person] obsessed with ruining the legacy of arguably the past century’s most dedicated and accomplished humanitarian”.

Bias by spin
CNN’s article shows bias by spin, since the writers of the article only included their one source’s perspective on the hygiene and conditions at Nirmal Hriday without including the perspective and interpretation of other sources. To illustrate, Gonzalez stated that “he was appalled at the poor level of hygiene and medical care he saw there,” but another source (who also volunteered at the organization) states that the critics are only lying, putting out the question of “How can they give life to a dying person while being careless with their health?”.
