Ted could fill a room with light just by entering it. He was one of my best friends in Paris and we remained close throughout years. A few things stand out about Ted- he was truly the most generous, kind person and would do anything for his friends. He took an interest in making life better for people-- he'd welcome you, if he couldn't help with something, he'd call on his friend in another part of the world, he would do a little extra research to help you find that one special item, he would add humor in difficult times, he would encourage you, he'd give freely of his energy without a second thought. He always reminded us to to take life in stride and to slow down and enjoy each moment. It was not uncommon to find Ted cooking for a room full of people. He seemed to find the most joy in bringing his favorite people together to share the simple moments. He had a natural intellectual curiosity with great insights. He was compassionate and kind and a principled man. A great traveler and explorer, always thirsty for knowledge. I will miss his friendship.

I'm going to miss our dialogs, the knowledge I would soak up just from getting the opportunity to discuss with him. He's standing next to me at the campus bar and randomly asks if he can buy me a drink. He talked a lot and was very opinionated, and I remember walking away that night thinking he was one strange dude. Seven years later and he was the best man at my wedding. Between that time I can't even recount all the places we traveled to, stories we made, beers we shared, topics we discussed and debated. I may have walked away that night with a negative first impression, but I would come to learn that he bought strangers beers because he was just incredibly friendly, inclusive, curious, wanted to know you and the life you've lived. He looked for friends around every corner and brought them into his orbit with a smile and a handshake and once you were there, with him, he'd keep his arm around you, a beer in your hand, and wouldn't let you go because he was loyal and generous almost to a fault. He talked so much to people because he is passionate, intelligent, observant, and had a wealth of wisdom to share. He forgave the mistakes you made. He laughed at the jokes you told. He gave and shared unconditionally. He was there for you, no matter what. An incredible soul. That was who Ted was.
