Hannah Scott the author of this article has written another book named “The
female serial murderer: A sociological Study of Homicide and the “Gentler
Sex”.  In this book Scott examines the
behaviour and psychoses of female serial killers who have acted alone or in
partnership with other women. Her background work suggests that she is clearly
interested in this area of study and that there is a lot more information on
female serial killers than we first think. Most research on serial killing and
mass murder has been done on males. Her research for this book was based upon
100 cases that were recorded in the US and other places from the 17^th
century onwards. Like the article produced by Scott and Fleming this book is
also interested in the gender bias towards women who commit crime I would
suggest that this book has helped shape the article on female family

BBC new report on MALE family annihilation, it also mentions female family
annihilation but the language used is very gender biased I thought this was
interesting in terms of the chosen article because both authors suggest then
when talking about crimes we as a society need to speak in a more gendered
neutral way and this article shows evidence as to why this is the case. The
evidence from this article was from police reports and news reports which is
similar to the article as they got their findings from news papers and old
reports about the 7 female family annihilators.

Other cases of family annihilation however interestingly all about male
perpetrators, this could be a reason as to why Scott and Fleming wanted to
transgress into female family annihilators because little work had been done on
them.

Research on the “male family annihilator profile” which was of interest to
Scott and Fleming who wrote about the male annihilator and the profile they fit
into, they then attempted to compare this profile to female offenders and find
some similarities and some differences. In this article at the end it mentions
the possibility of researching into females that commit these crimes and not
using male terminology to describe their crimes but actually understanding why
women commit such crimes in the first place. Scott and Fleming have attempted
to provide us with knowledge in this area and the research they found suggested
that the women who committed these crimes were mentally ill (insane) or
committing them because they feared they would lose their children some of the
motivations were similar to that of men but some are different and this is
explained below in my literature review of the article itself (The female
