One of the big things that I think we can promote is ownership by the students. Something interesting that Barberton is doing (my son is a freshmen there) is if the students graduate on time, they get to keep the Chromebook. I believe the idea being that they will get more buy-in from students and parents as far as taking care of the devices.

Addendum - I was not necessarily suggesting this as a strategy for APS, but using it as an example. Although, the expected lifespan of most Chromebooks is 5 years anyway.

If the district could adopt a standard, then anyone walking into the room (such as a TSS) can take a quick look at the color currently on and know how the students should be working.

I am not sure about the idea of having the devices be offered as incentive for students graduating as this seems like a large money drain for the district.

The teachers are going to have to actually utilize the technology and have the kids be doing innovative and awesome things. Like Elliot said I light the idea of implementing consistent lingo with how and when they should use their devices.

What is our goal or reason for going to one to one with Chromebooks and Chrome os? The same goal could be done with macs or windows or linux, ipads, surfaces, so why chromebooks and chrome os? Is the only reason because we are a google district? GAFE can be done on any os, all they device needs is google chrome installed. Is the lack of functionality and compatibility with the chrome os worth it? What about our Career-ed and Vo-ed classes? They have programs they need a full os for. How are they going to be productive with a chrombook and chrome os since, they will be given one from our one to one vision.

What is Akron's next goal? Are these devices replacing or supplement our current devices? We will continue to buy regular laptops to support special need students? Will we still keep open labs or will they change into open Chromebook labs?

I'm also questioning the ways we can control and customize the devices for student and teacher needs. Teacher A uses website A. Teacher B users program B. Do we now have to have each student add website A to their portal themselves instead of a desktop shortcut? Could we push that out to specific students or classes? For teacher B, with a laptop we could install it on only the devices that needed it. Now form my understanding we would have to do it per user account instead of device. This leads me to my next point.

How are we going to manage all of the apps being installed when it is now a per account install? How are we going to be constant across accounts? Are we going to allow teachers to pick out the apps they want to use? Are we going to let students install their own apps?

To my knowledge their isn't a chromebook accountability policy in place. What's our role in this? Is every building going to be different again?

There is still the issue of how we are going to monitor what is being installed and done on the device. The policy of family education.

Just the lack of information on how the district wants to go about this and the lack of information is disturbing.

~Kevin

"Although mentioned above, one area that cannot be overlooked, is ongoing support of the devices that must be supported by people. This includes break/fix, inventory, training, and generally just being there when an end user needs help."

We won't be able to continue our current support model. One or two people in one central location will not be able to provide all of the repair work needed for tens of thousands of devices. If you figure on any given day, 1% of all devices could need hardware support, you can potentially have 230 devices in need of repair or assistance every single day.

From a purely hardware stand point, the first two years of the adoption will be the easiest. The devices will be new and not need to be repaired as often. Once they have been in circulation for a couple of years, they will begin to fail or need repaired. That is when you'll begin to see an increase in hardware support.

What kind of SLAs will the district hold the IT department to in regards to repair time for broken student devices? Same day? Next day? How long can a student be expected to go without a device and how will that impact the student's education. How do we prevent a broken screen or keyboard from causing a failing grade for a student?

Keeping track of hundreds of devices per building, and keeping students and staff accountable for them is a huge task in and of itself. Most large corporations have an entire department devoted to doing nothing but asset management. Keeping track of which device is assigned to which student, which devices are currently being repaired, which devices are lost/stolen, which devices are new, checking out laptops to students at the beginning of the year, checking them back in at the end, inventorying devices for disposal. That is time consuming and monotonous work that will need to be accounted for. Simply storing the devices somewhere while not in use is a project in and of itself. How many hours will it take to move 500 laptops from one floor to another?

What happens to those people in the department that are currently sitting in the library or an empty desk next to the secretary and don't have an office? You cannot expect them to manage this many devices and not have a proper place for them to work. A room that can be locked so hardware can be stored or worked on should be considered mandatory. Think of theft protection.

The training aspect is huge, too. The program should start with solid and realistic expectations and goals. Do not give the program a chance to start off where the AUP is open to interpretation. Make it air tight and hold individuals accountable. It will be absolutely necessary to prevent students from being able to install any Chrome app or extension they want. Blacklisting the ability to install extensions and then whitelisting specific approved extensions should be the way to address this issue. This will take pressure off of the support staff and place it onto the administrative staff, but should reduce the amount of work in the long run for the organization.

Just being there when an end user needs help will become increasingly difficult. Prioritizing work through the ticketing system will replace the often preferred one on one phone call or drive by. Also, will the department be expected to be more involved with the student population? Working with students on computer issues is not the same as working with a teacher. What sort of involvement with the parents will the department expect?

Will they be willing to adjust curriculum based on this new technology?

This ties into the my second take away, which is PD. Professional development is integral to having staff adopt the new technology and use it in their curriculum. This is tough for a tech person to accomplish because they don't fully understand the inner workings of a classroom.

Lastly is planning for the future. The rationale must be communicated throughout the district, not just the "cool factor". Will this truly help raise growth and achievement throughout the district?

2. Are we creating slaves to the machines? I liked this quote... " There are lots of activities where having no devices out at all is appropriate." There's an old saying that if the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. With the 1:1 implementation, are we creating a single tool "hammer"?

3. Are these devices going home or residing at school? If they are staying at school, how is 1:1 different than just having a cart per classroom?

4. An EXTREMELY important part of any 1:1 implementation will be preparing parents for supporting their students. We will have to have extensive community outreach to insure that caregivers are prepared as much as possible. In some communities, these devices will be the only computers used by anyone in the household and that the students will know more about technology than the caregivers.

5. Device selection: We all love Chromebooks... However, are we sure that they will sustainable 3 to 5 years down the road? Will we procure devices that will support the Play Store and Android Apps? Do we even want to support Android? Rumors are that Chrome and Android are going to grow closer and closer in the future.

6. A big +1 to whoever posted about break/fix. We are going to have to implement a wholesale change to user and device support. This modification will need to be "baked in" from the outset, not implemented on the fly as issues raise their ugly heads.

1.) Cost of repairs will go down due to the fact each student will have their own device. With that happening they will be held responsible for the chromebook in their care.

2.) In Elementary schools terminology will be changed. Since every kid has a computer in front of them their eyes will be on the screens. So terms like "screen down" and others will need to be implemented so teachers can still keep control of the classroom.

3.) Also to go along with the break fix repairs and cost will there be need for after school support? The students take these home to do homework and complete assignments but what happens when it has an issue? Will they need to wait til the next morning to bring it in or when the TSS is in the building to get these repairs?

Mathew Reller: Student buy-in concern

The greatest obstacle I see with this endeavor is getting the students simply to bring the devices with them. Second will be to get them to keep the devices charged if the should happen to bring them. They already do not bring their books to class. The District expects the teachers to all but pander to this negligence by providing books for the students who forget... or pencils, paper, etc. Students are simply no longer held accountable for their own apathetic attitude towards their conduct in class. 1:World may work better in the grade schools, but I believe come MS and HS, it's going to be yet another challenge the teachers have to deal with on a day to day basis. It'll be one more thing that is pushed aside because it's more of a hassle than it is a help. Keep in mind, this is not speculation on my part. This is a conversation which I've had with many of the teachers at East CLC. I personally believe it's going to take a full four year for this initiative to be functioning as hoped.

~ Mathew

I would say that I have these 3 take-a-ways about the 1:world.

It will help to engage the students via the use of tech. Today the students use tech for so much of their lives, that if we don’t use what is available tech wise, we will have a very hard time holding their attention. Sadly, they are in the instant world. They want to see the response or answers NOW. Also, many students may be shy or afraid to answer out in class and this can help them to engage from their “safety zone”.

It will help to teach some responsibility to the student. Many students can’t be bothered to bring a pen or pencil to class. Now they will have to learn to bring their Chromebook to class if they want to participate in the class today. If I forget it, I just have to watch the others have fun and I can’t. Helping some of our students “mature” like this could have a life changing effect for them.

It will encourage students to use tech in their daily life. Wow, I can really use a computer to do something besides play video games. In the end, we hope to show the students that tech is more than just video games and music.
