In this portfolio I will be mapping through my work experience and experiences leading up to me becoming a professional dancer. I will include different types of auditions, workshops, teaching experience and jobs that have led my path and gained knowledge on where I would like to be in the industry. I will discuss how each individual experience has given me an insight into what professional role I will go into and how the skills I've learnt throughout my training have prepared me for the professional world.. I will then create a PDP which will talk about how I plan to utilize the skills I have learnt throughout my training into furthering my career.

Over 3 lessons we were taught by American choreographer and dancer Candace. Her style is commercial/hip hop and she taught us two contrasting routines.

The first routine was fast paced, hard hitting and very full out. I found this particular choreography a struggle due to the fact my pick up retention is not great and with the moves being fast and intricate if I lost a count I found it hard to pick back up.
The second routine Candace taught us was still in the style of hip hop but the music was very slow and oozy, allowing me to bring out a lot more personality and feeling through the choreography. There was a lot of room to add your own vibe and feel interpret the dance through how the music made you feel, which I found a lot more suitable for me.
Candace gave me some personal feedback after the first class, as it was clear I was stressed and worked up due to the intensity of the routine. She said I had the movement and the right energy I just needed to work on my pickup and learn how to attack every movement without throwing away the movement.
This taught me to push myself outside of my comfort zone and try classes that I do struggle with because I came away from that class feeling more confident and challenged.

After seeing his choreography previously I shocked myself by thoroughly enjoying it and really letting go and experiencing a new style I hadn't tried before. I found that the styles we've done with Jamie really link into being able top show dynamic within this kind of hip-hop.

Jason Nguyens workshop was a piece that was quite commerical, but was very particular on musicality. I found this class really enjoyable and because of the detail in Jamies musicality we have been taught over the last 3 years I feel like this really helped me feel comfortable in the style and gave me room to bring out my own style and add extra things into the choreography (such as a head roll etc) This is something I am trying to develop more and more throughout classes as in audition situations they will be looking for something to make you stand out

Robs class was probably one of the most beneficial and inspiring of 2016. He had brilliant energy and liked everybody to support each other and the atmosphere of the class was enjoyable in itself. He did a routine to the temptations, which was an old school hip hop style that needed copious amount of energy but if done full out was really fun. I found this style suited to how I dance as I think rather than intricate movements I am better at being full out and giving lots of energy and attack.

We had the privilege of being taught by the Into The Hoods Remixed cast, in which the character who played wolf taught us his introduction section. This was a very hard hitting full out hip hop routine, with every movement needing to be hit sharp. I loved this workshop not only because the choreography but they also did some groove foundations with us, which Duwane said you need to learn level 1 before you can reach level 10. Whilst doing the grooves he came over to me and told me to loosen up and gave me a bit of a 1 on 1 tutorial. I really appreciate this kind of help because I struggle with the basics of hip hop, I have learnt to pick up choreography but i don't have the foundations which enable me to make choreography strong.

In January I took part in my first audition for a potential job for Costa Cruise lines. This was a really challenging experience for me as it was my first professional audition. This was a technical audition and they were choosing people based on retention, performance skills and executing of the technique . From having regular ballet and jazz classes throughout Shockout this has helped buil my training to audition for a job of this level. In the choreography moves such as cabriole's (which translates to "caper playful skipping movement") (BalletHub,2016) which I wouldn't have been able to perform as in our Ballet assessment in 2015 a cabriole was the main focus of the choreography we learnt. As Mr Carpenter our jazz teacher was taking the audition it was very helpful that I was familiar with his style and the way he teaches. I got through to the second round of this audition and I believe the main factor that let me down was my facial expressions, as when I'm concentrating on choreography I can really struggle to use my face and I look very concentrated.

In 2016 I was a dancer for popular ITVbe reality show RHOC. In this role I wasn't actually taught choreography of any complexity but they hired 4 dancers through agencies who said they wanted dancers as they had more coordination that your average model. As it was a paid job with many perks involved being a dancer doesn't always mean performing the hardest choreography but having the knowledge and basic skills could help earn you extra money whilst looking for skills in the field you choose to go into. This was a brilliant experience which could hopefully open up more potential opportunities in this field which is something I am interested in.

In Manchester on saturdays I have started teaching Hen Party dance classes, with groups of upto 10 women choosing a dance style of their choice. The ones I have taught have been chicago, grease and thriller. I have found doing these really fun and a brilliant way to get your confidence up. As someone who is not comfortable with choreographing this is a brilliant way to build it up as the dancers are usually at a very beginner level, having never really participated in a dance class before. This requires for the choreography to be quite simple and just for them to have fun with and enjoy themselves. All styles I have taught for the parties are really contrasting themes. The Grease and Chicago parties have been mainly focused from what I've learnt in Jazz - Chicago the musical was based on Bob Fosse so I incorporated a lot of his lines I've learnt through researching him whilst I've been traning.

Every year for the past 3 years shockout have attended Move It - a well known dance exhibition in London where all the top performing dance schools have time slots to perform. There is also a number of workshops and stalls with information of different dance schools/colleges.
As I have never performed in Move It before I was really excited to be in Jamie's piece, which was a fusion of Jazz and Hip Hop. I was in the Jazz sections as that is where I felt more comfortable. We did a number of rehearsals in which Jamie and Eric cleaned, spaced and drilled the 3 minute piece. These rehearsals were very intense as Jamies choreography is very fast so if one person is out of time it looks very obvious within the piece.

Due to personal circumstances, I was unable to perform at Move It. Although I was really upset by this I was offered the chance to help out behind the scenes during the final rehearsals, which included me gathering props and costumes for the dancers. I helped out with styling the performers and staging and which props would work for which sections. This experience really made me think about being involved behind the scenes of production and I think stage management would be something I'd be very interested in. I am grateful for this opportunity as it has opened my eyes to opportunities involved in the industry that aren't directly being a performer.

As someone who is not particularly interested in musicals and the theatre as such, Chicago is a musical that I have always been desperate to see as I am a huge fan on the film. When we did a rendition of Cell Block Tango in year 2 I was gutted I wasn't able to be one of the 6 main characters as it is one scene that really sets a fire in my belly and reinvigorates my passion for dance.
When I went to the theatre I was in a particularly unsure place in regards to my future as a dancer/performer, but after watching the show I realised why I love dance so much. The style and way the show was performed is the style I would say I am most confident with and suited to.
As a long term goal, being in the cast of Chicago would really be what I would aspire to. The sleek, fosse style really coincides with what Mr Needham and Mr carpenter have been teaching us how to execute. My main feature and strength is my flexibility and my long legs, which Chicago has an abundance of and is also one of the main features of the cast members.

In a review by the Manchester Evening News:
The cast are not given any help by the monochrome scenery but they rise to the challenge and pull off a lusciously lascivious performance" (Danielle Roper, 2016)

Although I am not comfortable with Hip Hop - the performance absolutely blew me away. I was astounded at how clean and strong they were, proving that being in a production is not easy as some of the cast were dancing very full out and energetic for the best part of the whole 2 hour show. It made me realise that the hard work and intense fitness training we have been put through at Shockout is what we need if we are to go into a production of any style.

We were also required to teach the Foundation a class as third years. I found this experience really good as another of my long term goals is to open up my own dance school. This enabled me to teach people in Foundation skills they might not already know and to pass on the knowledge and technique training I have learnt throughout my three years here. I taught them the September dance (My Solo) as Jazz commercial is the area of dance I enjoy the most and feel comfortable with teaching. I think I have learnt enough and focused on that particular style personally to pass on my own choreography to other people.

Although I find it really nerve wracking teaching a class of 30 students it was a brilliant way to build my confidence until it becomes a second nature. Lisa Phillips says in her book The Confidence Coach: Take Control of Your Life and Wellbeing (2005) says a student came to her and said "Every time she considered moving forward and taking a dance class, her mind became filled with thoughts of discouragement, fear and anxiety". She then goes on to talk about how she encouraged the student that the thoughts are in her head, and a statistic from the National Science Foundation shows that we repeat 95% of the same thoughts every day.

In January a casting agent came into our university and gave us the opportunity to audition for a fashion show they were holding later on in the year. The audition consisted of a small choreographed routine we would need to perform with a freestyle at the end with a short catwalk to see who would be a suitable model for the job. Although I didn't get cast, the experience was definitely helpful toward my confidence and how to approach auditions in the future as this was the first thing of that kind I did. As I struggle with my confidence being put on the spot last minute really gave me an insight to what a casting would be like. Although I feel like it was beneficial to me, I found it quite an intense experience. In class since year 1 we have been told to freestyle at the end of class so I was comfortable to do this without question.

My professional development plan.

This is a plan that I will devise on how I will use the training I have received and further it onto my professional career. I will include my short and long term goals and how I hope to achieve them with the skills I have learnt whilst I have been at Shockout.
Throughout my training I have discovered my strengths and weaknesses within dance and how they have mapped out what path I would like to take. I have experienced many different styles of dance and discovered which I dislike and which I would like to continue training once I graduate and hopefully have the possibilities of getting work within these genres.

My Strengths
- I think my main attribute within dance is my flexibility and being limber. This is very valuable in the working world as they could be considered as a trick or used in freestyle, such as kicks or splits.
- Another strength I have is my energy. In an audition or performance situation I would always give 110% and make sure I went as full out as I could. When I need to perform I put my all into it and I think that really comes across on stage and could make me stand out.

My Weaknesses
- My confidence and self-belief is a major hold back, especially in intimate situations such as class. I let myself be deterred by the people around me and although it has improved dramatically throughout the past 3 years I still wouldn’t class myself as a confident dancer and would say I am quite reserved.
- My core and general strength is a hold back within my dance career. It really lets me down as I am sometimes not able to hold certain positions and that could let me down in an audition situation. I plan to improve this by improving my personal fitness plan, upping the reps of press ups I do at home etc.

My short term goals
-	Hired as a dancer on a cruise ship. This has been a goal of mine since we started having more regular jazz classes within Shockout and I realised it was the style I was most confident and comfortable with. Being flexible is a really helpful factor as that is an attribute cruise ships would look for. As our teacher Mr Carpenter takes a lot of auditions for cruise ships he teaches us a similar style we would learn on a ship and the typical audition techniques that you would get in a cruise audition. and it really has been a big confidence booster and is the style I would love to excel at. I would also love to travel and being on a cruise ship would be a brilliant opportunity for this.
-	Another short term goal after I graduate will be to start up my own dance class possibly on a weekend for younger children. I would love to teach them street/hip hop as I think with Shockout being a commercial academy I have learnt so many skills on a style that I wasn’t initially interested in before starting. Jamie and Chad and all the workshops we’ve had the privilege of having have taught us the foundations of hip hop/commercial right the way up to the intermediate levels have given me an interest for commercial. Although I am not ready to teach at an advanced level I feel like I am ready to pass on the knowledge I have learnt over my training at a beginner level.

My Long Term Goals
-	My main long term goal would be to start up my own dance school/community class. I would love to be involved with children who are struggling to make ends meet and give them an opportunity to dance even if they couldn’t afford it. I am doing my dissertation project on “Social Class in Dance” and it has really spurred on my interest in giving people an opportunity that they wouldn’t usually get. As my mother couldn’t afford dance classes for me as a child, coming to Shockout and train at such a high standard whilst being government funded is really helpful and I have learnt things I would learn at a professional privately funded dance school and I am really grateful for the opportunity.
-	Another opportunity I’d love to experience would be to work behind the scenes of professional productions. After working on the Real Housewives of Cheshire I was involved in a chat with a runner on the show, who told me everything in the industry is linked up and having a dance degree would be a good insight as I’ve seen the productions of many dance shows and performances. Also helping with the props for Move It gave me a taster of what it was like and I feel as my confidence isn’t great, working behind the scenes would be ideal for me. I would also like to look into being a TV Presenter, and seeing if there are any courses I could get involved in. Although my dance confidence isn’t great, I have learnt that within presentations I am a very confident speaker and a bubbly person so feel like that could be the right niche for me.
-	My main long term goal would to be in the cast of Chicago. After regular dance classes I know that the very particular fosse style of Chicago would be my dream career to be in the cast. Working on my technique and flexibility throughout the 3 years have been necessary as the show is filled with kicks and turns. When I went to see the production of it I was blown away by the technique and the effortlessness of the girls. I think I have a similar physique to the girls in the cast and I think if I really set my heart on it and worked hard enough I will be able to attend the auditions next time it tours.
