Respond to the error in the student work given in class. When you right-click the 3 dots, you get choices - you can make a video where you show your white board where you can help the student or you can draw on the whiteboard and then add an audio THEN SAVE.

Problems a, b, c

a.Alex has 53 nickels and some dimes. He has 71 coins all together. How many dimes does he have? (22 dimes)

b.There were 158 paper dolls at Barbara’s house. Her sister brought some more. Then there were 201. How many paper dolls did her sister bring? (359 paper dolls)

c. Carl gives 38 carrot sticks to his friend Monica. Monica has 75 carrot sticks on her party plate and puts the 38 carrot sticks in her ice box for later. How many does carrot sticks does she have? (103 carrot sticks.

In this problem, we are adding the sister’s dolls. You have the right idea that we need addition to help us solve this problem. But, in this case, we are missing an addend and need to subtract the 158 dolls from the sum of 201 to find how many dolls the sister brought. Here is a way we can break it down in subtraction.

We can start by subtracting 1 from 201. This way it is easier to do more subtraction after this. How much would you like to subtract first? Yes, we can do 200 - 100 which brings us to 100. What is another number we can subtract now? Yes, next, we can do 100 - 50 = 50. At this point 1 + 100 is 101 + 50 is 151. We have subtracted 151, but we are trying to subtract 158. How many more do we need to subtract? Yes, we will subtract 7 more. This brings us to 43. Meaning, the sister brought 43 dolls.

The student got the answer of 22 but the correct answer is actually is 18. To show a student how to get there, I would write out 71 - 58 because the total number of coins is 71 so that is the number you start with. Then, I would draw a number line starting at 71 then subtracting 50 to get 21. Since, I already subtracted 50, I still have 3 left to subtract. So, then I subtracted 1 to get to 20 and then subtracted 2 more to get 18. This means that Alex has 18 dimes.

For this problem I decided to do a number line. I knew it was a subtraction because I knew if Barbara started off with 201 paper dolls, but started off with only 158, we would have to subtract 201 - 158. I would draw number line to help my students solve the problem. I figured we could start off with subtracting 100 from 201. That would be 101 and than from there I subtracted 50. From there I got 51. Subtracted 1, which equals 50. I then subtracted - 7. This means Barbara has 43 paper dolls.

The student got 103 carrot sticks; however, the correct answer would be 113. This seems to be a simple error of place value and could be easily corrected. I would show the student how to break apart the numbers to easily display the correct solution. First, I would have the student break the 75 into 70 and 5. Then, I would have them break 38 into 30 and 8. Then, I would have the student add the 70 and 30 together to get 100. Then, the 8 and 5, to get 13. Then, I would have the student add them together and see the correct answer is 113, not 103.

C. Carl gives Monica 38 carrot sticks. Monica started with 75 carrot sticks. This means we would have to add 75+38 to get how many carrot sticks Monica now has in total. I started off the problem by separating 70 and 5 from 75 and 30 and 8 from 38. By doing this, we can now solve the problem in a more simple form. Now, add the 70 and the 30 together. This will add up to 100. After this, add the 5 and 8 together. This will give us 13. To get the final answer, the last step is to add 100+13, which equals 113.

From my understanding, it looks like the student forgot to carry the 10 from the 13 they got by adding 5+8. This caused the student to get an answer of 103 instead of 113. By breaking apart the problem, this will avoid any errors of forgetting to carry a 1 over.
