I grew up in a household that lets say has always been....curious! My family were forever taking us to museums, watching documentaries and explaining things. My mum had been a nurse but retired due to ill health at 45, my Dad was a 'school drop-out' but had worked his way up from an apprentice to do his HND Diploma at Rolls Royce. They both had keen interests in all things science, political and history. It rubbed off somewhat. I remember as a child just listening to them talk about 'stuff' and then reeling it back to my teachers and friends who always seemed amazed!

I grew up in a less than desirable area. My parents made the decision that rather send us to the local school they would pay for my siblings and I to go to a private school. I went there from 4 - 11years. The classes were very small so we had more time it felt with the teachers. In year 6 I was doing year 7/8 level Maths and English. I remember all of my teachers there, nearly all of them positively.

It wasn't always the most positive influence, my memory of secondary school gets dulled as I battled with ill health for the final 2 years. My English and H&SC teachers particularly always supported me and had my back. When I received my GCSE results my English teacher could not contain her excitement, against all odds I had one of the best English literature marks in the school!

As a scared 17 year old I started University, my mind boggled at the prospect of writing assignments and doing literature searches (it still does today). Not many of the lecturers that I remember made a huge impact, I would listen to the lectures and that was that at the time. I was far more interested in the hands on work and learning on placement.

I had some wonderful mentors throughout my training. It's hard to pick out just one, they all had influence in many different ways. Some were more book learned and would delve into the anatomy and physiology, others gave me priceless learning experiences and opportunities.

Fast forward 2 years qualified and I started in the ICU. I was overwhelmed by the time and care that was taken during my induction. I was one of about 8 that started and we had a well organised 8 week induction comprising of theory and clinical shifts to arm us with the basics we would need.
It was at that point I first thought I would love to be a nurse educator. Strange as in a way as I looked up to them but there were also elements/qualities that I was determined not to portray.
