Jonas at the middle of the novel has more freedom now than before in the community because of his job as the receiver of memory. He is getting to learn all these things about the real word. So I picked an eye as a symbol of him because he is now seeing all the things that the others in the community do not know about, so Jonas is now opening his eyes to the real world.

Jonas at the end of the novel has broken free and is trying to survive the journey he is on. Jonas has little hope that he would make it to a place called Elsewhere. At the end of his journey he climbs to the top of a hill where he slides down from a sled that was waiting for him which gives him all the strength, hope and courage to not give up hope. I am choosing broken chains to symbolize Jonas as he escaped The Community and who is now safe and free in this place called Elsewhere. Jonas changed from being in Sameness to beating it. At the beginning of the novel Jonas is following the rules by how The Community is demanding everyone to act, telling them what to eat and taking things away from everyone in The Community. The Community was hiding things from everyone like colors, emotions, choices and even events in history are kept a secret from the people in The Community.

Society because Jonas is going against The Community because it's keeping things from the people and Jonas wants to know why they are doing this.

Due by Wed., May 1=question 1
1. Use chapter 3, pg 29, read 1st full paragraph and answer--What does this detail suggest about the role of the announcements in Jonas’s community? Be specific and support your answer.
YOUR ANSWER-- The purpose of the announcements is to keep everyone in the community intact (AVP= to publicly shame people so they obey the rules.
Jonas’s community is highly regulated with rules. Read the sections about the rule against bragging (34). Answer and support-- What is the rule’s purpose in the community? Why does it exist? What impact does the rule have on the community?
YOUR ANSWER--The rules purpose is to keep everyone equal in the community (not to hurt others feelings and comes with consequences). Its impact is it keeps everyone equal.

YOUR ANSWER--3rd person limited because on page 66 to 67 the author writes,"Jonas was certainly glad that that assignment was taken.."

Use p. 82: How does Jonas feel upon leaving the auditorium? Which words make you think that?
YOUR ANSWER-- on page 82 it states that ¨upon leaving the the auditorium Jonas felt the apartness.¨ Apartness is a word that would make me think this because in the community everyone is equal and the same so Jonas now feels different then everyone else and distant.

How has Jonas’s attitude changed in chapter twelve? Make sure to explain your answer using details from the text. Use chapter 12. HINT-Keep this in mind as you think about a new symbol to symbolize Jonas in the Middle of the Novel.
MY ANSWER- Jonas is now different because he is more cheerful and because of his job he is eager to receive more memories(pg 121).

The climax in The Giver is when Jonas finds out what release means. When Jonas became the new Receiver of Memory he found out that his father, who works at the Nurturing Center, killed a twin, baby boy, he was devastated when he found out. In The Giver, on page 188, it states, "Once again he saw the face of the light-haired, bloodied soldier as the life left his eyes. The memory came back. He killed it! My father killed it!" Jonas was very angry with his father but he didn't know what he was doing because The Community was keeping death away from him and everyone else. The song Bring me to Life by Evanescence has a quote, "Bring me to life. I've been living a lie. There is nothing inside, bring me a life." this represents the climax because Jonas is now devastated and is confused by what he learned about release. But Jonas strides on from the situation is planning an escape from the horrid Community.

Jonas is back at the top of a high, snowy mountain like before when he received the memory of snow but this time was different because at the end of the hill was not soft, fluffy snow but hard, blueish ice. Then the sled went straight downward and Jonas slid down and felt the cold air blow fast on his face. Almost at the end of the hill he skidded down and hit a bump in the hill and the impact to the sled caused Jonas to fly forward violently in the air then on the ice, he fell face forward on the jagged ice with his leg twisted behind him, then, with a snap. Now, experiencing pain for the first time, Jonas was shocked and not even three seconds later he felt a burning pain in his leg and when he looked at it and tried to move but when he did he screamed out in pain "Nooooo!" His scream disappeared away into the empty landscape. Then he was back in the annex Room.

Resolution

The resolution, in The Giver, is when Jonas finally gets to a place called Elsewhere and now is meeting his new family and Gabriel being as baby Jesus when everyone was waiting for him. When Jonas was on his adventure and he thought he would either die or go back to The Community because of his lack of food and Gabriel and him freezing, but he gets back his courage and strength to keep moving on and to stride on to go to Elsewhere. This song by Ozzy Osbourne called "Mama, I'm coming home" is a fit to the resolution because in the song it talks about how someone is changing and coming home to their new family. So this represents Jonas going to Elsewhere and finding a family that's waiting for him and Gabriel.
