"Who am I? Who are you? Who are we? The language profile: a door opener to intercultural discussions ." by Teacher Academy

In the webinar of Wednesday, 1st March at 17h00 CET, Erika Hummer will be giving some examples that will make your students reflect and discuss about the languages they speak, as well about their own identity, making them realize the importance of respect in terms of differences. Please use this padlet to ask Erika any question that comes to your mind regarding this topic or about the cultural diversity for learning in everyday practice. We will be collecting these questions and we will ask them to Erika at the end of her presentation. Many thanks to all for your work!

But if the meeting of the school with the children and their families was not simple and still not be, he has had the great merit of forcing you to reflect on what a multicultural society and on such tasks as an institution forming school It must assume in order to equip young people to live in this new reality.
Having a stranger in the classroom has forced us to reflect on what we were teaching, its usefulness compared to the needs of students, our mode of relating with them. He has forced us to rethink, to our cultural and value traits, the similarities and differences with other peoples, the constituent elements of our and others' identities.

We discovered the need for an intercultural education, ie a debate that allows one hand to learn about different cultures, identifying and removing the prejudices that there prevent the meeting, the other to better understand, in comparing the cultures, values, and the salient aspects of our.
But the sudden impact with people, languages, different cultures also had another merit: made us
reflect on the great theme of diversity, which before had been only confined to the aspects of disability or deviance.
We discovered that diversity with respect to foreigners, in the physical or in the language. in religion or habits, it was not the only one present in the class. Next to the ethnic and cultural diversity and often even before it existed others, such as gender diversity or that of generation, including those who are more wealthy and those who are poorer or between those who are religious and who is not, and so Street. Each of these differences correspond to very specific cultural traits. which are crucial for the definition of individual identity and give rise to conflicts and intercultural incidents, but also to exchanges and dialogues, just as in the encounter-clash between people of different nationalities or ethnic groups. Intercultural education then it is not only appeared as a theme to be addressed when the presence of foreigners in the classroom or in the company undertakes to find some ways to cope with difficulties and tensions that can be generated, but instead as a large valid educational purpose in each case and that the school, agent educator par excellence, must ask yourself to train young people who are able to live in a peaceful and democratic towards any kind of diversity.

Giuliana - ItalyIn our daily practice unfortunately we come across some collegues who find it difficult to recognize the value of cultural diversity for learning in the classroom. In other words, the presence of a foreign student in our class (whether it is a migrant or even an exchange student) is considered more an obstacle than a source of enrichment. How can we help them to change their mind and make them use positively cultural diversity as a learning context?

Another problem for me is that students from China study only subjects they think are important for job for example maths or english. Obviously at First they study only Italian but when they speak quite well, they don't study. Maybe is necessary interesting them.

I attended the webinar this afternoon which was great. While listening to Erika, a few ideas came to my mind.
Regarding the Language Profile activity, I can easily imagine how this could be used at the beginning of an eTwinning project to help students get to know each other. I imagined the activity in international teams, students working together on a same silhouette. I even thought about using the web 2.0 tool Thinglink. How? The teacher creates a pattern with a picture of a silhouette. One pattern is shared between 3-4 students from different countries. Each of them can add words, videos, songs, pictures, ... in different languages to complete their language profile. This activity is also wonderful to celebrate the day of languages for example. And, to relate it to something we talked about in a previous module, it is great to develop empathy skills of students.
I also reflected on the Identity profile activity and how this could be used in eTwinning. Why not do it using a photocollage application and share it on the Twinspace?

Discussing about cultural differences is not always easy in my area. Despite being used to migrants coming from the so called "third world" (I live in Reggio Calabria, where hundreds of migrants arrive on boats), my students are qquite narrow-minded. They do not even conceive the possibility of a world or society which may be different from the little provincial world they see everyday. The Language profile can be helpful to outline that everyone have their own peculiarities, and can be useful to create a friendlier environment, with reciprocal respect of the differences.

I always try to teach strategies on how to solve math problems without understanding everything in the text, and now I'm going to let the students make math problems for me in their own language that I have to solve. As a teacher you have to show the students that you are interested in their culture. It is also very motivating for them to teach the teacher sometimes. You can see how it boost their self-confidence. I think integrating culturally diverse students into the classroom setting is mostly a question of the attitude of the teacher.

Generally I came up with new meanings such as language biography, linguality, identity profile and I am very excited about this. I think I have learnt numerous things and approached new sections. Especially linguality is extremely significant to me. The ability to express what I mean and make my students understand what I am saying is one of my first goals. So all those examples Erica presented are very useful and inspiring to me. Some of them are: 1. drawing with different colours different languages in different parts of body
2. painting what is important for them, what they can do well
3. singing in order to "unlock" very shy pupils
4. sign language

Marina, Italy I agree with Erica on the importance of enhancing the language identity of each child by encouraging the design of their language profile. We value as much as possible the mother tongue, which is closest to the emotions, through which pass all learning. Very important are the multilingual lessons accompanied by non-verbal language, mimic-gestural, drawing-painting, music, dance, to make understand as much as possible and foster communication on several levels.
