Korea's Three Kingdoms Period (57 BCE - 668 CE)

During the three dynasty period, Buddhism spread across Korea and was imitated by Chinese examples. Although by the late 7th century, according to Stokstad and Cothren "Korean sculptors have created a distinctive style, exemplified by a magnificent gilt-bronze image of a bodhisattva seated in meditation." As time passed, Korean culture made Buddhism its own way. Although they still had him in a seated pose it wasn't like the original. Like China, they used the gold crown (above) expressively for tombs of royal authority. Most of the containers for offerings of food were placed in the tomb to nourish the spirit of the deceased.

According to Stokstad and Cothren, "the temple is modeled after Chinese cave temples of the fifth, sixth, and seventh centuries, which were in turn inspired by the Buddhist cave temples of India." Just like the inspired cave-cut Buddha above, a difference in this is Buddha's hands are in the "bhumisparsha mudra," the earth-touching gesture symbolizing his enlightenment. Although it is inspired by the historical Buddha Shakyamuni at the moment of his enlightenment, it has its difference like the hands that make it unique to its dynasty.

According to Stokstad and Cothren, "the Goryeo dynasty is best known for its celadon glazed ceramics." For example in the celadon above, the finest and most intricate pieces went to the palace, nobles, or powerful Buddhist clergy. Usually, celadons had little decoration, but by the 12th century, potters added molded embellishments or carvings to make them into a more unique piece. Like the Unified Silla Period, Buddhism was the state religion of Goryeo. Instead of statues, sculptures, or carved-out temples, Goryeo focused on paintings representing Buddha. With rich colors of silk and gold reflect the luxurious taste of the period.

Han dynasty culture and developments had an influential impact on Korea because of the colonies that were established there. The Han dynasty was part of the reason why Buddhism spread so quickly from China to Korea. Plus, they prospered in trade and brought Korea into the wider political sphere of Han-dominated East Asia.

They wanted to continue the Buddhism culture with many, large important temples around the Silla capital. The dynasties influenced by the six dynasties period made their own unique changes to their Buddha but the original meaning/representation was still there.
