"...schools are the focus of many hopes for political, social, and economic improvement." (pg. 20, Joel Spring). My responsibility as a teacher will be to educate the future citizens of our society. It is a very important job, which should not be taken lightly. Apart from the education, I will have the responsibility of caring for another persons child. I aim to make my classroom a safe space for children to feel comfortable and feel okay to ask questions. Teachers have so many responsibilities which I could continue listing but to me I think the two most important things are to educate our future and make sure they feel safe in the classrooms.

I believe that learning is the process you go through to understand a topic/concept. An example would be "It is not possible for us to feel what people in other times or circumstances felt, but that it's crucial that we attempt to understand how the conditions in peoples lives affect them." (Heidi Tolentino). If you take this one quote out of the essay and read it, without having any prior knowledge about the article itself. We can use this quote for anything in social studies/history.

I feel like learning is more than just memorization. I memorized an entire song in Spanish. But do I know what it means? Can I understand what they are saying? No, which is why I think learning is the process that you take to understand a concept/topic.

I believe that teaching is a big responsibility. As a future educator, I need to work collaboratively and improve the lives of children and families. I need to strive to ensure rights for all students so they are able to succeed. (A framework for Understanding Ruby Payne).

It is also important to teach to where the students understand the material, not just memorize concepts but deeply understand what they are learning. I believe that teaching is also having the responsibility of really knowing if your students understand the material being thrown at them.

I believe the purpose of schooling is to educate. Going back to the first thing I posted in this class, "My responsibility as a teacher will be to educate the future citizens of our society." I want my students to fall into curiosity of the world around them.
"The purpose of education... is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions, to say to himself this is black or this is white, to decide for himself whether there is a God in heaven or not." (James Baldwin).
I think schooling is just that, educating them to want to learn about the world they live in.

I believe all my future students are important and should be valued as such. They should each be able to have equal opportunities as well, they talk about this in chapter 5 about equality of educational opportunities. I stand behind this idea, no matter the students backgrounds they should have equal resources as others. This doesn't always happen which is why we are still fighting against inequalities. I will fight for that and believe with my whole being that all students are important and should be valued.

I believe students learn best when they are being presented information that corresponds with their best learning style. I learn better for the most part, when I can see and read the information given to me. I would consider myself a visual and a verbal (linguistic) type of learner. Every child is different and every class is going to be different so this is where paying attention to your students come into play. Here's a good video that explains the different types of learning skills.
https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-are-learning-styles-types-lesson-quiz.html

I believe my students will learn best when I provide a safe environment that they can engage in their learning. If students are feeling scared to enter the classroom, then they are more than likely not going to want to engage in conversations. I need to find a happy medium between being a "strict" teacher and a "laid back" teacher. If I'm too strict then the students will be afraid to ask me questions. If I'm too laid back then the children might not respect me.
Going further into children feeling safe in the classroom... In the American Education book on page 71 & 72. it states some statistics about bullying and cyber-bulling. This is a real issue within schools today and I feel like my students will feel safe when I provide hotlines and information about who to talk too if that is ever the case for them. This relates to their learning because if a student is being bullied then they might not have the clear mind to engage in learning.

I believe community/family is the foundation for children to have support while learning/growing. The video that I watched for this class... "Teach Us All" makes a statement that "It takes a village to raise children.". I fully believe in that statement and I think that support starts with the family and the community around them. Children need support while learning, they need to be able to ask questions and figure out about the world around them.

I believe collaboration should be done between teachers/parents and children. Communication is very important to have when being a teacher. Poor communication leads to emotional distraught which children can detect, no matter who it is coming from. Teachers should keep parents informed and parents should be able to communicate and ask questions if needed. "It takes a village to raise a child." and we should be able to collaborate with one another to help our children grow.

I believe being a teacher activist is being aware of the community and acting to make it a better place. Activist is defined by dictionary.com as "A person who campaigns to bring about political or social change." It's our job to be aware of problems but as an activist, we have to participate and actually help make a change. It is important to our students that we stay relevant in issues and that we have a point of view that can help with certain issues.
