Question: Technology in the classroom is great, in the BYOD scenario, how does a teacher keep up with all the different devices and apps? (Question answered by Lara Flynn).

First of all, teachers need to be prepared and trained in the different technologies/devices/apps available so that they know how to incorporate them in their lessons and classroom. LanSchool is perfect for teachers to monitor student activity (while using BYOD). It actually lets you view all your students’ screens so you can quickly see if someone is off task. It’s like having extra help and an extra set of eyes in your classroom. There is no easy solution for this question but I do believe that the more we as teachers know and keep ourselves updated with new technologies the better able we will be at preparing and educating our students.

Question: My concern with BYOD, would be how will teachers maintain the classroom on days students forget their own device or for students who do not have a device that they can bring to school? (Question answered by Jerrica Broughton)

Question: As stated in your presentation the cost and maintenance of implementing 1:1 education would be a substantial amount. Would it be recommended for districts/schools to ask students to pay a technology fee each year to cover these expenses? (Question answered by Stacy Carter)

There are two common ways school districts address the cost associated with the maintenance of 1:1 devices.

Option 1: Students and parents sign a 1:1 user agreement and only pay a fee when damage has occurred to the device. Each time an incident occurs the student/parent is responsible for a greater amount of the repair/replacement cost.

Option 2: Students and parents sign a 1:1 user agreement and pay an annual technology insurance fee between $35-$99 (depending on the device). This fee covers the device for mechanical breakdown, accidental damage and a reduced replacement cost if the device is lost or stolen. The more incidents occur the more the student/parent must pay.

Below is an example of a districts 1:1 user agreement with a technology fee.

Question: For BYOD, what would the risk be for a student bringing a device with a virus that could get into the schools server? For 1:1, would there be a plan in place for students who do not have wifi or any internet connection at home? (Question answered by Brandi Carter)

There are minimal risks if the school is set up with a good virus and firewall protection system. Even if the student has their own device, once they have logged onto the school Wifi, they are under protection. However, if the student is very tech-savvy, they could hack into the schools server and could create countless problems. Even with the best protection systems hackers break into school systems firewalls every day. It doesn’t matter how good the system is, there always are hackers who are better. Anyone can cause problems with protection if they know what they are doing. Therefore, when it comes to BYOD and 1:1, a lot of the issues comes down to classroom management and monitoring. There are various ways that teachers can cut down on the risks. One way is by having students always log onto the school Wifi. Another way is using a technology monitoring program such as GoGuardian or DyKnow. The programs allow teachers to see what websites students are on. It even allows teachers to limit the sites or limit the tabs.

In regards to 1:1 that means schools provide a laptop for every single student. However, students may or may not be able to take the laptops home. Also, just because schools are 1:1 does not necessarily mean they must use internet programs. Many programs can be preinstalled on all devices. Some programs may be Microsoft Office, many virtual labs, Podcasts, and various writing activities. There are ways to offset the imbalance if schools prepare and set guidelines for BYOD and 1:1.
