Britain and France issued a guarantee of Polish independence. Britain went further and signed the Anglo-Polish Agreement in 1939. Hitler promptly began moves to formally bring an end to the German Non-Aggression Pact with Poland. Hitler had been demanding the return of the free city of Danzig and the Polish Corridor since October 1938. This was a challenge to the Treaty of Versailles. One of Hitler’s other complaints was that the Polish Corridor cut the main rump of Germany off from East Prussia.

Stalin’s Great Purge of 1937. Hitler was also concerned that an invasion of Poland could potentially bring about war with the Soviet Union – something he wanted in the long-term. When the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact was signed in August 1939, the world was shocked – but the agreement was mutually beneficial for both leaders (Stalin and Hitler). A secret agreement was made to split Poland between the two countries.
