There were multiple leaders who sparked movements and made differences ,but some of the most notable are MLK, Rosa Parks, and Malcom X. MLK was head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was known as the head of the American civil rights movement. He organized many protest like the March on Washington and many others throughout the states ,but mostly in the South. One of the protests was the Montgomery Bus Boycotts which was ignited by Rosa Parks who refused to move onto the back of the bus because of her skin color. The civil rights movement made most of their progress through non violent protests and by putting a light on what was happening to minorities to the rest of the United States ,but Malcom X was also Notable. He was head of the Black Panthers which looked to enact changes through violent approaches. Although these didn't work as well it was a good reminder of what could happen with the racial tension if changes were not made in Congress

The civil rights movement was started to combat racial discrimination, segregation , and unfair Jim Crowe laws. It's hard to find an exact start of the movement. As early as 1948 President Harry Truman initiated a civil rights agenda to end racial discrimination in the military for African Americans notable contributions in WW2. These events helped set the stage for grass-roots initiatives to enact racial equality legislation and there was some change here ,but nothing close to how organized and powerful the movements were in the 50s and 60s. There were many little attempts ,but most attempts or negotiatens for change were ignored or not taken seriously, until the mid 50's. The first most notable and organized protest was the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 in Alabama. This striked national attention and let the country know the time for waiting for change was over.

Government Reactions and Change

We saw resistance from the government for a while. In Southern States we saw racists keep trying to elect segregationist and some even refused to follow the Brown v. Board of education decision to let black kids go to white schools. The federal government helped by sending troops in Little Rock to make it happen ,but most Southern states followed the decision reluctantly without force. The federal government kept telling MLK and the movement to wait ,but the civil rights movement kept pushing until they eventually enacted the Civil Rights act of 1964. The landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. It addressed voting rights, employment, public accommodations, education, and more.

The movement was extremely successful. MLK's leadership and other leaders organizing this movement in a non violent fashion worked very well. It forced moderate Americans and the government to take a good look at what was happening and finally enact change through legislation. Theres still some inequality today and we've seen groups like BLM form to continue to combat it. Some people consider it to be a continuation to the civil rights movement and others disagree. It's a polarizing topic in the U.S. today ,but there's no question that these movements are important to bring attention to these issues and the Civil Rights Movement was incredibly successful by forcing governments to enact legislation and bring attention to racial inequality.
