When the girls find it broken into pieces, Lori completely breaks down and says she'll never get out and Jeannette swears she will because she is afraid that if Lori doesn't make it out then she won't either. Jeanette gets offered a job in Iowa but gives it to Lori and tell the lady to pay her by buying her a buy ticket to New York. There was no plumbing so the family used a ditch to put their waste the kids hair was tangled and matted and they wouldn't shower. Part of the reason there was no money was because Rex would gamble it all away. The family would constantly "sleep under the stars" which sounds much nicer that it is, but the children couldn't complain because their life was supposed to be one big adventure. Then there was her mother who would refuse to feed them and would prefer to paint, she would ask them what was more important a meal that would only last a couple minutes or a painting that would last a lifetime. Jeannette didn't know consistency her family was always moving whenever her father felt like the "FBI" was catching up to them so Jeannette never put down roots. And it was difficult for her when she moved to park avenue and she was wearing pearls and heels and had a Persian rug collection, she felt guilty because her parents were still living the same old ways. "We moved around like nomads. We lived in dusty little mining towns in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Small disappointments like them having no birthday gifts to big disappointments like when Rex took Jeannette to a bar and even picked out a dress for her. Then a man approached her and took her back to his apartment where he got physical with her and basically assaulted her. When Jeannette told her father he didn't do anything he just dismissed her and told her that she had just been "pawed" and that he knew she could handle herself. On Jeannettes 10th birthday Rex told her she could have anything she wanted and she asked him to stop drinking. He agreed and proceeded to tie himself to his bed for days and went through an intense withdrawal, of course one day he came home drunk and demanded to see Rose Mary. They then got into a big fight in front of the kids, it was so bad they pulled knives on each other. The fight ended with them hugging and laughing and left Jeannette disappointed because Rex was drunk once again. "I didn't feel like celebrating. The nickname shows Jeannette's persistence and endurance when she realizes that she and her siblings must live apart from their parents if they are ever going to have better lives. Although it was a childhood nickname for her he on the other hand called her that even leading up to the time of his death. "I got a lot to regret about my life, but I'm goddamn proud of you, Mountain Goat, the way you turned out. When she was only three years old she was cooking for herself already she was boiling hot dogs on the stove while she stood on a chair her skirt caught fire and it left her with serious burns that she had to be hospitalized. All because her mother couldn't be bothered to cook a meal for her 3 year old daughter. Once they got older it only got worse Brian, Lori, and Jeannette were constantly behind their mother when she got a job at a school not only did they have to get themselves ready but they had get their grown mother ready too as if she was a child. "At night Mom sulked and muttered under breath. In the morning she slept late and pretended to be sick.
