Example: Coffee

During the crusades to the Middle East, knights brought back a new luxury item called coffee. Coffee was first drunk in Arabia in the 15th century. By the 16th century, it had reached Persia and Turkey, and Europe soon followed. It was reported to have healing properties and was drunk strong and black. European doctors believed it could cure stomach ailments and prevent hunger. Today, coffee is a top luxury item export, between 1998-2000, 6.7 million tons of coffee were produced and sold. If coffee had not been exported into Europe and the rest of the world, there would not be such a large demand for products from Brazil or crops in Africa- it creates a lot of jobs for labourers and farmers.
Fun fact: In 16th Century Constantinople, not providing your wife with enough coffee was grounds for a divorce!
