Spend the first 10 minutes looking at your peer's artwork.

Then look at their sketchbook page. Give their sketchbook page a star rating based on the following criteria:

5 Stars: Fantastic, very detailed. Shows planning stages very clearly. By looking at sketchbook page you can clearly see the artists plan. Artist went above and beyond.

3 Stars: Average amount of planning. Somewhat detailed. By looking at the sketchbook page you can kind of see the artists idea and direction.

1 Star: Not enough information on planning page to show process and ideas. Not sure what artist was planning in their sketchbook.

Then, add a comment to each person's artwork. In your comment you need to address the following things:

What is something that caught your eye in a positive way?

What is something the artist could improve on, or change to better their art?

This piece continues with my inquiry of awareness. I extended my inquiry with this piece to demonstrate awareness of the pressure put around me to do well. I illustrate this through the eyes surrounding her and butterflies covering her. I started by mapping out proportions and used graphite and charcoal to blend and shade the face and flowers. I outlined with a sharpie and then made the background a metallic gold. I used experimentation by trying a different material (charcoal). I also experimented by trying more abstract depictions of nature (The eyes having eyes in the middle). I revised my inquiry to reflect self-reflection and awareness of my surrounding and expectations.

It also allowed me to explain my inquiry and better represent the meaning behind the piece. It also allowed me to test out my graphite and charcoal pencils. My ideas involved in my artwork because I was originally going to use a silver background but decided against it after seeing the shade of the face and flowers.

This piece of artwork is of one of my dogs. In my inquiry there is a relationship with my animal in my artwork. I did sketch out my artwork and then I drew the shapes on the animal. Once I was done painting the spots the color they needed to be, I had to add the texture to the painting. Once I was done with the texture it had turned out really well and put it together. I experimented by using different brushes then what I usually use and the fan brush worked really good to help me the texture in there.

I decided to use 2 of my closest friends for this project. It helps further my inquiry involving how the people around me affect my life path. My two friends, Wesley and Alex, are very close friends to me, and have really shown me what it's like to live as your true self and not be scared to hide away from those who oppose difference. I thought their contrasting colors and appearances would make for an interesting piece; first I began by drawing out their face shapes and all the smaller details I knew I would have to focus on later. Rather than using grid lines and erasing my sketches, I thought I would experiment a little by keeping the sketch in its full to help me along the way and layering the oil pastels on top enough to cover it all in the end; along with that, this was my second project using oils, so I tried out different methods of blending, highlighting, and adding colors to the shadows of the faces to make everything more life-like.

This artwork is based off of the world wide pandemic happening right now and before it all started. The globe on the left is pre - covid, and the globe on the right is the current. I wanted to do this art piece because I am always thinking about how everything was okay before covid hit, we could go to concerts, didn't have to wear a mask at school, and eat at restaurants normally. I have the hand reaching out to the other "world" as a reference to go back to how things were. As for the background colors, I chose the yellow to orange to red because yellow is a calming color (peaceful), and the red is "bad". I used revision and experimentation during this project by at first I was going to put little germs all over the covid world, but instead I put a mask so it was clear as to what it actually was and not messy. I used experimentation during this project by going through many different colors for the mask and the background.

My sketches helped me with my actual artwork by making me really plan it out and to see what I wanted to do. I did not stay true to my sketches because I ended up not liking the little germs all over the globe, so instead I just stuck with the mask. Other than that I stayed true. ( I have the arrows to show that I wanted the Pre- covid side on the left and the covid side on the right.

This work focuses on a sister inquiry to my original one; it focuses on repair and progress. My original inquiries were about abandonment and aftermath. I was able to show a moving-on through the types of hands shown and the colors I chose. I chose to have a very old and arthritic hand reaching for a younger, more healthy-looking hand. Both hands are reaching for each other, one reaching for the other out of desperation, and the other reaching out with a sense of responsibility to those in need. I think that this can represent a sort of progress from moving to the old and damaged to the young and new. I also used softer primary colors and black, grey, and white oil pastels and tried to make them look like rain or that the colors were fading into one another. I decided to go with primary colors because no matter what color you want to make, you always begin with one or all of the primaries. I wanted to show how young people were new and still being "mixed" if you will.

Continuum of White by Ashleigh Vogel

This piece is a continuation of my inquiry exploration of how dreams can express abstract thoughts and feelings. This piece represents a feeling of being stuck in the same position but feeling yourself change. Its a feeling that we all know too well in a sense of doing the same thing over and over again while we age in the process. This feeling is synonymous with a schooling/white-collar work environment, which I used as the setting for this piece. A continuum is a continuous sequence of elements that are adjacent to each other but differentiate slightly too the point where the opposite ends are extremely different. I reflected this definition in the sequence of the same character at different ages in the same position of writing at a desk. For the environment, I chose to have a lot of line art for a fuzzy effect as the values darken from the closest to the farthest point. I choose to not have a lot of light to have the front two characters stand out more and give a somber feeling as the string of characters continues. Originally I wasn't going to put the rabbit in this piece, but while I was working on the piece I thought the area was lacking so I added the rabbit in anyway.

I will admit I did not plan in a sketchbook, I wanted to dive into the project as soon as I could. The sketch I did use along the way influenced my decision of how messy I would make the hair, where I would focus certain shading, and which details I would put the most work into. For the most part I stayed pretty true to my sketch, though certain bits I did work on more than I thought and had to hold off on work for other areas for some time. In this piece I think I really evolved my shading and realism overall, and I already see an improvement from this piece compared to my last project.

This page influenced my piece by having a close replication of the space placements I wanted and the choice of lighting. While planning this, I wanted to experiment with space and how I can reflect a continuous string of characters while having the viewer not be bored by looking at the same character over and over again. I decided to have each character be in its own unique place in the space. For the lighting, I wanted it to go along with the flow of the spacing so I decided to have it be darker in the front and lighter in the back to enhance the spacing and make some of the characters stand out.

In this specific piece I used it to show how different you can feel on the inside about yourself and how it can sometimes feel like it is pulling at you when you have different feelings about yourself. I wanted to keep the colors dark and give it almost an eerie feeling. I only used acrylic paint throughout this piece. At first in this art piece I wanted to also use oil pastels but ended up deciding it would look best with only paint.
