Chief John Ross argued that this was illegal and took it all the way to the Supreme Court, which agreed with him that it was indeed illegal. Then President, Andrew Jackson, ignored this finding and continued to force the American Indians from their land. In 1838, the army forced the Cherokee to make the 1,000-mile journey trip to the west. This barbaric act leads to thousands of Cherokee becoming sick and dying from the terrible conditions along the way.
