But, if I tried to explain it to you now, I don't think you'd understand. One day, I hope, it'll be explained to you" (Ishiguro 73). Mrs. Lucy is responding to Polly's question regarding Madame taking their best artwork and poetry. Mrs. Lucy seems to want the children to have more information than they are being given.

"But I realized now just how much of what occurred later came out of our time at Hailsham, and that's why I want first to go over these earlier memories quite carefully" (Ishiguro 67).

Quotes:

"The woods were at the top of the hill that rose behind Hailsham House. All we could see really was a dark fringe of trees, but I certainty wasn't the only one of my age to feel their presence day and night" (Ishiguro 87). Rumors went around Hailsham that if students left Hailsham horrible things happened, including children dying. Kathy always feared what was in the woods and felt the safest when she was at the front of the main house because you couldn't see the woods through the front windows.

"We sheltered there for a while, and every so often a student would come running out of the fog and in through the doors of the house, but the rain didn't ease. And the longer we continued to stand there, the more tense I grew because I could see this was the opportunity I'd been waiting for" (Ishiguro 103). For a while, Ruth left Kathy out of her secret society. Kathy decided to confront Ruth for implying that Miss Geraldine gave her the pencil case when she didn't. Kathy realized that this hurt Ruth's feelings and felt awful about it.

Characters:

Kathy: Kathy realized that Ruth couldn't play chess, but acted like she could. Kathy confronted her and Ruth ignored her for this.

Miss Geraldine: She was Ruth's favorite Guardian. Ruth created a secret group to "protect" her. She saw Kathy, but never confronted her for this.

Conflict

Whenever Kathy and Ruth walked by somebody playing chess, Ruth would tell Kathy that they could have played a better move.

Quotes:

"Little things like these might well have pleased Ruth, but they were still far removed from what had actually happened between us under the eaves that foggy day, and the sense that I'd never be able to sort things just continued to grow" (Ishiguro 108). After Kathy confronted Ruth, she felt awful for treating her friend like that, so she did little things to let Ruth know that she didn't mean to hurt her. Their talk occurred in the pouring rain under the eaves, making the scene seem dreary.

"I suppose it had something to do with it being a secret, just how much it had meant to me. Maybe all of us at Hailsham had little secrets like that - little private nooks created out of thin air where we could go off alone with our fears and longings" (Ishiguro 127). Kathy kept her tape a secret because it had a picture of a cigarette on it and she adored it. Kathy wondered if everybody at Hailsham had secrets and secret hidden spots where they would go to think and be by themselves.

Characters:

Kathy: Kathy dances to her tape and was spotted by Madame. Kathy lost her tape and thought back on all of her memories of the tape. She also wondered why stories about the woods were told and why the students were so special.

Ruth: Kathy and Ruth made up and did favors for each other. Ruth gave Kathy a tape when she lost hers.

Tommy: Tommy and Kathy talk about how it's odd that Madame cried when she saw Kathy dancing. Anytime teachers mentioned anything strange about the students future, Kathy and Tommy would talk about it in secret.

Miss Lucy: Students asked Miss Lucy if she had ever smoked. She told them that she had, but the students here are special and cannot smoke because of what it would do to their bodies and they are super important.

Madame: She spotted Kathy dancing to "Never Let Me Go," pretending to be holding a baby. She did not confront Kathy and bring up the topic. She just watched her and cried and then walked away shaking.

Conflicts:

Kathy confronted Ruth about implying that Miss Geraldine giving her a pencil case.

Quotes:

"It's just as well the fences at Hailsham aren't electrified. You get terrible accidents sometimes" (Ishiguro 134). Mrs. Lucy made this statement in class while the students were discussing World War ll prison camps. Mrs. Lucy knows about the outside world and wants to subtly warn the kids at Hailsham.

"Your lives are set out for you. You'll become adults, then before you're old, before you're even middle aged, you'll start to donate your vital organs. That's what each of you was created to do" (Ishiguro 138-139). Mrs. Lucy told the students clearly what had been alluded to since they were young. She told them that they would be donors.

"None of us stopped to think how she felt, Miss Lucy herself. We never worried if she got into trouble, saying what she did to us. We were so selfish back then" (Ishiguro 151).

Characters:

Kathy: Kathy was always watching Miss Lucy. The early days at Hailsham were innocent and happy, then as they got older, they pieced together things and their lives took a darker turn.

Tommy: Tommy stopped having his tantrums. He cut his elbow and the boys told him his whole elbow would unzip if he bent his arm. Eventually, the joke went from being about Tommy to being about the students one day becoming donors and being unzipped to give their organs away.

Miss Lucy: She told the students that there were things that they were told and were not told. She told them that they would not become actors, go to America, or work in stores. She told them they were donors and were born specifically to become donors.

Miss Emily: She gave the students the sex talk. She told them they can't have sex with outsiders because sex is more important to them since they can actually have babies, unlike the students at Hailsham.

Conflict

The students at Hailsham joked about Tommy's elbow unzipping. It is clear that the guardians are supposed to keep the kids mostly in the dark about what will happen to them. Miss Lucy is conflicted and tells the kids more than she is supposed to.

"In a way, sex had got like "being creative" had been a few years earlier. It felt like if you hadn't gone it yet, you ought to, and quickly" (Ishiguro 166). The kids were getting older and experimenting with sex. Kathy was contemplating having sex with Harry.

Characters:

Kathy: She received a creative calendar from a student a few years younger than her. Her and Tommy didn't talk as much as they used to. She showed Tommy the calendar and it hurt his feelings because it reminded him the he wasn't creative. Kathy wants to have sex with Harry. She believes that since everybody is doing it that she has to do it. Kathy thought she heard gas and went to check. She ended up walking in on Miss Lucy madly writing in a small room.

Ruth: Ruth and Tommy have been dating for 6 months. The are not a show off couple. Ruth believes that Hailsham guardians tell the kids they should have sex, but they also shouldn't because she believes they mean they should have safe sex, but after they leave Hailsham.

Tommy: Tommy was offended by the creative calendar that Kathy showed him. Also, he was picked on since he sat it mud and it looked like he pooped himself.

Miss Lucy: In a small room, she was writing madly. There were small pieces of paper everywhere on the table.

Conflict

Tommy had gotten mud on the lower back of his shirt. Laura made fun of him. Ruth and Kathy still had their deep conversations at bed time.

"That was why, when Ruth said what she did about my not being slow making friends with certain veterans, I wasn't just cross. All those paintings, poems, all those things of yours I gathered over the years" (Ishiguro 412). Madame was fascinated to here what the students thought of her collection.

Quotes:

"We took away your art because we thought it would reveal your souls. Or to put it more finely, we did it to prove you had souls at all" (Ishiguro 423). Miss Emily told Kathy and Tommy this. They wanted to know why they had the Gallery and the gallery was to prove that the students had souls.

"But a generation of created students who'd take their place in society? Children demonstrably superior to the rest of us? Oh, no. That frightened people. They recoiled from that" (Ishiguro 429). Miss Emily told this to Kathy and Tommy to explain why Hailsham had been shut down. Technology had become so advanced that scientists were able to created humans with any desired characteristics and this threatened people.

Characters:

Kathy: Kathy and Tommy were upset about referrals not being true. They asked why there was a gallery and why Hailsham closed.

Tommy: On the car ride home, Tommy asked to step out of the car. He went into the darkness in the middle of the road and started screaming. After he calmed down and got back in the car, he threw his art work out of the window.

Madame: Her name is actually Marie-Claude. Kathy asked why she was scared of the students. Miss Emily told her Madame gave everything to the students and worked hard for the students. She told them that all of the guardians were afraid of the students.

Miss Emily: Miss Emily explained why Hailsham shut down and she told the students why Miss Lucy left. Miss Emily explained why she cried when she saw Kathy dancing to "Never Let Me Go" : I saw a new world coming rapidly. More scientfic, efficient, yes. More cures for the old sicknesses. Very good. But a hash, cruel world. And I saw a little girl, her eyes tightly closed, holding to her breast the old kind world, one that she knew in her heart could not remain, and she was holding it and pleading, never to let her go" (Ishiguro 442).

Miss Lucy: Miss Lucy left because in order to keep the students emotions from being shattered, they shouldn't know what is going to happen to them.

Conflicts:

Tommy and Kathy can not get a referral. Referrals were just a made up idea. Tommy had a tantrum when he found this out.

Themes:

What does it mean to be human?- Tommy was always seen as the most normal student because he showed emotion and acted his age (throwing tantrums). Kathy told him that she thinks that deep down Tommy knew what was happening: "We couldn't even understand how you could ever get like that. And I was just having this idea, just a thought really. I was thinking maybe the reason you used to get like that was because at some level you always knew" (Ishiguro 448).

Quotes:

Tommy wasn’t acting the same around Kathy: “If for instance, the two of us were reminiscing about old Hailsham people, he’d sooner or later move the conversation round to one of his current donor friends who’d maybe said or done something similar to what we were recalling”(Ishiguro 450).

When Kathy arrived at Tommy’s centre, he ignored her in a way: “Even then, he carried on listening and smiling. He claimed afterwards he’d signaled to me to come over, but if he had, it hadn’t been at all obvious” (Ishiguro 450).

Characters:

Kathy: Kathy was offended that Tommy didn’t want to talk. Then, she was offended when Tommy didn’t want her to be her carer.

Tommy: Tommy didn’t want Kathy to see him when he was having his fourth donation: “Kath, I don’t want you to take this the wrong way. But I’ve been thinking it over a lot. Kath, I think I ought to get a different carer” (Ishiguro 456).

Conflicts:

Tommy offended Kathy by saying she didn’t understand since she wasn’t a donor: “I’d feel a similar little prickle of resentment each time he told me I didn’t understand something or other because I wasn’t yet a donor” (Ishiguro 452).

Themes:

The idea of nostalgia- “You know, Kath, when I used to play football back at Hailsham. I had this secret thing I did. When I scored a goal, I’d turn round like this... and I’d run back to my mates” (Ishiguro 464).

The idea of nostalgia- “I lost Ruth, then I lost Tommy, but I won’t lose my memories of them” (Ishiguro 465).
