The setting seems to be earlier 1900's. His tone is very worrisome throughout the story. He is a young man who just wants to be appreciated for all the hard work he has done and also wants his grandfathers approval. Although his grandfather dies and said some really disturbing things like " Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight." I took this as he doesn't want his son/grandchildren to give in to "white men". This is ironic because later on in the story "white men" treat him horribly. The characterization within the story shows that he doesn't listen to what his grandfather was trying to tell him. He actually does the exact opposite when he is completely made fun of and made a mockery of by the "white men". It is so hard for me to think that stuff like this would really happen and even worse stuff than I can think of too. But that was during a different time that I have no idea about. I think in the end, when he dreams of his grandfather; The message that states " Keep this Nigger-Boy Running" means that his grandfather knows that he was played like a puppet. The theme for this story is to not let "White Men" be in control of you, otherwise you will not be free.

This picture is the graduating class of Howard University in the early 1900's. It is really crazy to see that there were not many who graduated. Although, there were probably not very many who were able to attend as well.
