Death is haunted by humans because of their cruelty. Death learns that humans can be peaceful but can also be cruel by causing war or other things that could harm someone. He knows that humans can't always agree with each other and sees how they are also selfish with each other. I can conclude that Death learns more and more about humans which helps him realize that humans are cruel but sometimes good.

He is also invested in how cruel and kind people are and also deaths attention got drawn by Liesel because he sees this enduring strength in her life. In the text it says "Death witnesses acts of selfishness, cruelty, sacrifice, and compassion. He sees humanity continue to live after they lose their homes and the people they love, and he sees them rush to kill one another in war."

The narrator, Death, is fascinated by humans. but he is mainly drawn to The Book Thief. AKA, Leisel. Here are some reasons why.

He is amazed on how strong she has become when things go terribly wrong. Like when she was separated from her biological family. She got closer to Hans Hubberman and bonded with him. She is also daring because she steals books but books are banned and are mainly burned in Germany. Her first book, "The Grave Diggers Handbook". She stole from a man while she was at her brothers' grave. And the second was from the big bonfire of books called, "The Shoulder Shrug". Another reason why Death is drawn to her is by her kindness to her neighbors during the air raids. She calms Frau Holzapafel by reading aloud to her.

The reason that Death is being haunted by humans is because he takes their souls and the more dead bodies, the more Death has to work. This is because Death takes people's souls from their corpse and takes them to the afterlife. The war that the humans have caused is haunting Death because there is so much death around the world and he doesn't get breaks. Death is haunted by humans not because they want to, because of the war that they caused. They are ruining lives across the world and Death has to go on and take the soul of a poor 5 year old who's city was bombed.

He thinks humans are one or the other because he only watches, and doesn't interact with people. Because humans can be so evil or so good, Death has a state of mind that haunts him by humans, because they can be so one-sided at times.Death's state of mind is a symbol to the readers to try and be better, because as we said before, Death is haunted by humans.

He mostly cares about Liesel because 1. she is the main character basically. and 2. because she is very interesting to the narrator. The cause is her being smart and compassionate. This is the reason "death" is haunted by humans, and mostly Liesel.
