I am a big believer in just getting to know a kid. This is the general gist of what I do when I am getting to know my kids:

I don't care a lick about sports, but if my student is into them, I will happily talk about how I love to attend live basketball games even though I have no idea what's going on. I will ask them to teach me about which sport they like, and have them feel like they're sharing something they love with me. I will give them big validation, ask follow up questions about what they just said, and then even ask how they would incorporate it in what they're doing at that moment (usually a preliminary sketch of the project we are starting).

The whole goal is for me to get to know what they love, how they live, what they find important, and what they're interested in (sometimes that means going to their sports games, their plays, saying hi to them always in the hallways and preferably in a goofy way, checking in on them, asking about what they are up to in other classes, you know, etc).

dude I love these things so much. I have assigned seating, and if their cellphone is not in their caddy (obvious exceptions for my kids with medical needs i.e. diabetes and medication reminders + kids that had their phones taken away by mom or dad or guardian which was previously discussed in an email i.e. hey Frankie said that you took his phone, that's true right? because he does not have it in class) I can say loudly "HEY WHERE'S SUZY? IT LOOKS LIKE SHE'S NOT IN CLASS BECAUSE I DON'T SEE HER PHONE HERE... HUH WEIRD" and I'm saying it right behind Suzy to be a silly goose about it and have them put it up

this is just an interesting guide about routines in classrooms to establish order. there is little to no deviation from it for the class the whole semester, simply so I don't lose my mind when the kids come marching in... also it is so much easier with a routine for kids who have ADHD, and I can attest because it works for me!

stolen idea from Terry

Terry's whole semester-long project for his history students (you know, the ones he sends into national history day) got me thinking, and I made a super basic presentation for an art version that I thought would be good "when done" work for each stage of the project we are working on (students are not allowed to go past each stage I assign to them. for instance, if I had the assignment of "come up with 10 sketches for your design" and they finished 10 good ones, I would not let them move on to the "choose your final design and make it big and colorful" stage until everyone else is ready). I will have them work on this instead!
