They would have had darker skin as they were in the Middle East, not European. They are also all wearing very detailed fabric as the Netherlands main trade and way of obtaining money. They made all of the characters wear fine fabric clothing which would not have been accesible to most in the time of Jesus.

The Portinari Altarpiece is a massive triptych commissioned by an Italian resident in the Netherlands named Tommaso Portinari. It was originally an altarpiece for a church in Florence that was connected to a hospital. The wings of the altarpiece depict two figures in grisaille and these two pictures are Mary and the angel Gabriel showing the annunciation and this scene would’ve been the most common view of the altar piece because the triptych was rarely opened only for holidays and celebrations. But after it was opened you would be magnified by the view of the interior of the triptych and would have been astounded by the rich features and vibrant colors featured on the three panels within the Portinari Altarpiece when it was first opened. The Nativity, depicted in the middle panel, is a calm, wonderful time just after Christ's birth. The Virgin Mary and the newborn Christ child are surrounded by angels, and three shepherds have rushed in from the countryside to see the miracle. Any historical viewer would have recognized this scene right away, and most would have spotted the iconographic detail of certain items and settings with numerous meanings. In the left panel Tommaso Portinari is and his two sons are shown praying to the center scene showing he will always be prayed for and lastly the two other figures in the painting are St Thomas which is Tommaso's saint name and St Anthony the patron saint of plagues relating to the location of this piece being in a church that is connected to a hospital. And to the right is Maria and her daughter Margarita in the mirror of their husband and the sons. This side of the painting as well has two saints whose names are Saint Margaret and Saint Mary Magdalene. Saint Margaret is the patron saint of childbirth and is behind Maria. In front of Joseph, we see a shoe, which allows us to imply that this scene is taking place on a holy ground as seen before on the palette of Narmer where he is barefoot. The vase in the center panel holds significant flowers that each represent something different; The white flowers represents purity, the purple flower represents royalty, and the red flower represents the passion and torture of Christ. In addition to the vase, there is a vessel that holds 3 red carnations (reference to the three nails in Jesus) and 7 blue columbines that represent the 7 sorrows of Mary. This a prime example of Flemish art as a result on The hyper focus on the small details for background as well as the beautiful color and details on the drapery and modernization of the clothes Mary and everyone else is wearing.

The lilies on the table symbolized Mary’s virginity. The hanging water pot symbolized Mary’s purity. There are many parts to this where it symbolizes religion.

Subject Matter: This artwork represents Jesus and the Stations of the Cross. The themes represent Jesus and theology in general just like the rosaries.

Flemish Interpretation: The whole panel is set in a contemporary Flemish home and incorporates household objects and many are invested with religious meaning.

Elements: The household objects represent religious meaning. It consisted of three hinged panels. The left panel depicts the donor and his wife. The middle panel shows the Annunciation. The right panel portrays Jesus in his workshop.

Symbolism: Jesus carries a cross, which is a memory of his destiny. The white lilies, the water, and the white towel represent purity. The small windows on the side represent the enclosed and virgin life that Mary lived.

Function: The altarpiece depicts the moment when the archangel Gabriel announces the Virgin Mary that she was chosen by God to conceive Jesus.

Why is this a good example of Flemish painting?

On the left, we see the patrons who decided to have this painting made. They were also shown kneeling, ordinary when recognizing patrons. The middle shows the virgin Mary and archangel Gabriel in modern form, while the right side has Saint Joseph with his tools that show many signs of symbolism. It is extremely detailed, as to showing even the small items Joseph has in his workshop, to the rusting of the door on the left panel.

Subject Matter - This Altarpiece depicts the story of Christian salvation. It shows the two donors off to the left, the important Annunciation with both Mary and the Archangel Gabriel, and Joseph in his workshop with his tools, foreshadowing the Devil and the crucifixion.

Function- It Folds up and can be carried,Designed to keep people's attention from physical objects to spiritual concepts, and To assist in personal dedication. The white lilies, the water vessel, and the white towel all relate to Mary's purity, as do the small windows on the side of the room and the half-closed

windows in the back, stressing her confined, virginal life.

Very realistic and very in detail such as Shiny nails, shadows, and rust are all examples. Shows how old the doors are. Even in the background, there is an interest in light, and they use oil paint to paint texture unlike Italian Renaissance)There's a lot of reality here, but it's conveyed in a different way. The room's space does not make sense because perspective has not yet been established. The table has two perspectives. Creates a telescoping effect, almost as if the the spectator enters the room
