I think this book shows trust because when Cole touched the Spirit bear, it trusted Cole to not attack. For example when Cole touched the bear it trusted Cole not to attack and stay calm and release all the anger that had built up in him. Also another example for trust is when peter trusted Cole and went out together and I also think that this is a move for them to be friends. I think this is why trust is the theme of the story. Cole went through many of Edwin and Garvey's lesson. Cole danced the dances he walked the ancestor rock, and he went to the pond. He also had to deal with the consequences of what he did to peter. The book ends with Cole giving Peter the at.oow. Passing on the blanket shows that because Peter wouldn't accept that gift unless he had forgiven Cole. Cole also wouldn't have given the gift unless he forgave himself. This is why I think the the theme of the book is forgiveness.

First Cole, in the start of the book Cole was rude, mean and violence, and didn't trust people. Now at the end of the book Cole is not mean he's kinda rude but he trust people. The next person that changed was his mom. When his mom was drinking now she quit drinking and she can talk with Cole. The last person that l think changed was Peter. I think that he changed by lots of ways. One of the ways with talking with Cole at first when he came to the island he didn't really talk with Cole. Now at the end, they talk much more.-Kayla

Cole hurt Peter at the beginning of the story. He smashed Peter's head on the sidewalk and now Peter is unable to walk normally. Cole later on in the story wanted to help Peter heal by telling Edwin that Peter should come to the island. Cole knew that he couldn't fix what he had done to Peter physically but he still wanted to help Peter mentally heal like Cole did. On page #202 it says "You're not listening!" Cole screamed across the water. "I can help him!" This shows that Cole is desperate to own up to his mistakes and be responsible and help Peter. This is how I think that the theme of this story is healing. -Ariele
