Leeds is a city in Yorkshire. Yorkshire is made up of four counties: North Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. These areas cover a large chunk of the North of England, and are home to roughly 5.8 million people.

There are now 8 cities in Yorkshire, including York, Leeds, Sheffield, Hull, Bradford, Ripon, Wakefield and Doncaster.

It is easy to travel around Yorkshire. We would suggest a day out to York as it is full of history and lovey quaint shops.

You will be mostly based at St James Hospital 

Leeds has a good network of public transport around the city. Most places can be reached by bus or train.

If you have a smartphone you will be able to download apps that allow you to check when buses are coming and map out where you want to go. Some of the best apps are:

To travel further a train may be required and most locations can be accessed via train from the Leeds Railway station. Tickets can be bought online using your bank card or at the Railway station in cash. It is always cheaper to buy tickets in advance.

Taxis can be expensive depending on where you are going. Locally it may be cheaper to take a taxi if more than 3 of you are travelling together. Uber is also a good taxi company to use.

There are many buses you can use to get in and out of Leeds city centre. Many buses also travel between different areas of Leeds without going into the city centre. You catch a bus from a bus stop which is usually painted red. The bus stop will usually include timetable information. Copy and paste the links to find out more. 

Greetings and Expressions:

1. Ey up - A friendly Yorkshire greeting similar to "Hello" or "Hi there."

2. 'Ow do? - Another way to say "How do you do?" or "How are you?"

3. Ta - A common abbreviation for "thank you."

4. Ta-ra - A casual way of saying "goodbye."

5. 'Ow's it goin'? - A friendly inquiry about how someone is doing.

6. Nee-boddah - Yorkshire's version of "nobody" or "no one."

7. Nowt - A word meaning "nothing."

8. Ginnel - A narrow alleyway or passage between buildings.

9. Scran - Food or a meal.

10. Brew - A cup of tea.

People and Character:

1. Tyke - A term affectionately used to describe a Yorkshire person.

12. Lad/Lass - A boy or a girl, often used to refer to young people.

13. Champion - A compliment, meaning "great" or "excellent."

14. Luv - A term of endearment used for both men and women.

15. Reet grand - Means "absolutely splendid" or "excellent."

July tends to be slightly warmer than August, with average daytime highs around 21°C (70°F) and night-time lows near 13°C (55°F). Rainfall is moderate in both months, with around 60-80mm expected in July and slightly less in August. Sunshine hours average around 6 per day in both months.

I would be prepared and bring a water proof jacket, sun glasses and something warm to wear in the evenings.

Leeds has a whole menu of delicious dining experiences on offer. At Leeds’ heart is a thriving independent food scene, renowned for its diversity, energy and innovation. Passionate people, known for their craft, serving up plates to be proud of. You’ll find it in the street food stalls of Kirkgate Market and Trinity Kitchen, in independent venues like Ox Club and The Reliance, and in the yearly Leeds Indie Food festival, sprawling across the city.

Kirkgate Market also offers street food offering which includes local’s favourite’s Owt, The Owl and Manjit’s Kitchen. For some of the best Indian food try Tharavadu, Indian Tiffin Room, Bundobust and many more. A visit to Trinity Kitchen is a must with a menu of ever changing cuisines. 

Nandos is a favourite and offers NHS discount if you show your badge. Leeds is the home of curries, its worth a try
