For our video project, I took on two key roles: Costume and Production Assistant (PA). As part of the costume team, I worked alongside two other girls to design and coordinate the outfits for each character. I started by gathering inspiration and drafting ideas using Pinterest, focusing on looks that fit the characters’ personalities and the tone of the film. We collaborated to finalise costume choices that were practical, visually cohesive, and helped tell the story effectively. As a PA, I supported the production by helping organise the set, managing time, and assisting with whatever was needed during filming. These roles allowed me to contribute both creatively and logistically, and gave me a better understanding of how different parts of a production come together.

first day shooting (22nd)

We started filming on the 22nd of May, and I was working as a Production Assistant (PA) that day. I arrived early to meet the group and helped carry equipment and food from the car park to the filming location. This helped the team get set up quickly and stay on schedule. It was a fairly simple scene with just two characters, so there wasn’t a huge amount of setup or coordination required. However, I still stayed alert and available throughout the day in case anything was needed.

Most of my time was spent keeping an eye on the equipment, making sure it stayed safe, organised, and easily accessible for the crew. Even though the pace of the day was relaxed, I stayed professional and focused on my responsibilities, knowing that being present and reliable makes a big difference in how smoothly things run. I regularly checked in with the actors and the rest of the crew to see if they needed water, snacks, or any other form of support. It’s often the small things behind the scenes that help everyone stay comfortable and focused on their roles.

Being a PA that day gave me the chance to observe the filming process closely and learn how all the departments—camera, sound, direction, and performance work together during a shoot. Even though my role may have seemed minimal on paper, I understood that my presence helped create a positive, supportive environment on set. That early experience helped me prepare for the busier days to come, where my responsibilities would grow and my role would expand.

For costumes, we made sure each actor had what they needed to fit their roles and visually communicate their character’s identity and story. As a team, we sourced and bought the cleaners’ costumes for both girls, making sure the style was simple yet distinct enough to signal their roles clearly on camera. One of the other girls on the costume team brought them in on the day of filming while I focused on my PA responsibilities, which highlighted the importance of teamwork and clear communication between departments.

Since most of the outfits used in the project were the actors own clothes from home, I took a proactive role in costume coordination. Each night before a shoot, I messaged or spoke directly with the cast to let them know exactly what I wanted them to wear for the following day. I gave clear guidance on colour palettes, styles, and accessories to make sure everything matched the character’s personality and remained consistent with previous scenes. This level of planning helped maintain continuity throughout the project, especially as scenes were filmed on different days and sometimes out of order.

I also made adjustments as needed based on what the actors had available, always working to find a balance between practicality and the creative vision. It was important to stay flexible while still keeping a strong sense of the overall aesthetic. Working closely with the actors helped build trust, and I think that made the costume process smoother for everyone involved.

Overall, my role in costumes allowed me to develop skills in planning, styling, communication, and visual storytelling. I came to understand how clothing can subtly influence how an audience perceives a character, and I enjoyed being part of that creative process from start to finish.

On the second day of filming, I met the group at 8am at the Allerton car park to help carry equipment to the location. I was later joined by another PA, and together we helped make sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. Most of the day was spent in a single room where the scene was being shot, so our main responsibility was to watch over the equipment and support the crew as needed. It was a chilled and relaxed day, with no major issues, which allowed us to stay focused and organised.

On our next day of filming, I had more responsibility as I was working as both Costume and Production Assistant (PA). I arrived at the location for 8am and spent the full day in the room where we were filming. The morning began with costume duties. I carefully went over each actor’s outfit to make sure everything was correct and aligned with our initial plans. I checked for continuity with previous scenes, made minor adjustments where needed, and ensured each costume matched the tone and personality of the characters. This preparation helped the actors get into character and allowed for a smoother filming process.

Once the costumes were sorted and approved, I transitioned into my PA role. I helped carry in extra equipment, assisted in organising the space, and made sure that snacks, water, and any other essentials were readily available for both the cast and crew. Throughout the day, I remained attentive and checked in regularly to offer help, whether that meant repositioning props, tidying up the set, or simply being on hand in case anything came up unexpectedly.

Balancing both roles kept me constantly engaged, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I enjoyed having the opportunity to contribute to both the creative and logistical sides of the production. It gave me a greater appreciation for how all departments depend on each other and how important it is to be flexible, communicative, and proactive on set. Taking on dual responsibilities taught me a lot about time management and being adaptable, skills that I know will benefit me in future projects.

On this filming day, my main responsibility was as part of the Costume team. I arrived at the location for 8 with a nurse outfit from home that I had sourced for the doctor character. By bringing it in myself, we were able to stick to the budget and avoid spending any extra money on that costume. When I handed it over, I stayed to make sure it looked right on camera and matched the vision I had planned. I was pleased with how it looked once the actor tried it on. It suited the character perfectly and worked well with the overall tone of the scene.

In advance, I had also spoken with the rest of the cast about bringing in their own outfits from home, which they did on the day. This allowed for a more natural and believable look for each character while keeping things practical and affordable for the team. Once I had checked that everyone’s costume was correct and camera-ready, my role for the day was mostly complete. I wasn’t needed for the rest of the filming session, so I left temporarily and returned later in the day to collect the costume and check that everything had gone smoothly.

This day really highlighted the importance of good planning and communication in my costume role, especially since I wasn’t on set for the whole shoot. Making sure everything was prepared ahead of time allowed the rest of the team to carry on with filming without delays or issues related to wardrobe.

I arrived in the morning to support the team but didn’t need to stay for the entire day, as there wasn’t a lot going on that required my help.

On this filming day, I was focusing on my role as part of the Costume department. I arrived at 8am, as usual, bringing in one of the key costume pieces, a cleaner’s outfit that one of the characters needed for the scene. We had previously agreed that both characters would also wear items from their own wardrobes to match the setting and keep the look natural and grounded. I made sure their outfits were consistent with what we had established earlier in the project and that everything fit the tone of the scene.

Once the actors were in costume, I double checked that everything looked visually cohesive and appropriate for their roles. I also took several photographs of the costumes in place, both for documentation and continuity purposes. These images were useful in case we needed to refer back to them during editing or when filming other scenes later on. Ensuring consistency across different filming days is a big part of the costume role, and taking these kinds of steps helps avoid mistakes and confusion down the line.

After confirming that the costumes were working well on camera and there were no further adjustments needed, I wasn’t required for the rest of the day. The scene being filmed didn’t need further costume input, so I left the team to continue with the shoot.

Although my time on set that day was short, I still played an important part in making sure everything was ready before filming began. This experience helped me understand how even brief contributions, when planned properly, can have a strong impact on the overall smoothness of the production. It also reminded me how valuable clear communication and early planning are when working as part of a team.

Working on this video project as both a Costume Assistant and Production Assistant (PA) has been a truly rewarding and eye-opening experience. Balancing both creative and practical responsibilities gave me the chance to be involved in multiple aspects of the production process, and I gained a much deeper appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that goes into even the simplest scenes.

As part of the costume team, I learned how much planning, attention to detail, and communication is required to bring a character’s appearance to life. From sourcing clothes using Pinterest inspiration to collaborating with others on the costume team, to preparing and bringing in full outfits, I played a key role in shaping the visual tone of our project. Making use of items from home and coordinating with the cast about what they should wear helped us stay within budget while still achieving an effective and believable look for each character. I also took care to document outfits with photographs for continuity purposes, showing me how important organisation and consistency are in film production.

As a PA, I developed important teamwork and support skills. Whether I was carrying equipment from the car park, setting up food, checking on the cast and crew, or simply watching over the equipment during filming, I always tried to make myself available and helpful. Some filming days were busier than others, but I learned that being reliable and prepared, even on quieter days, is just as important to keeping a project running smoothly.

Throughout the project, I also learned how important flexibility and communication are. There were days when I had to switch between roles or step in with short notice, and being able to adapt quickly made a big difference in how I could contribute. I’ve gained more confidence in my ability to take initiative, manage my time effectively, and support a team in both creative and practical ways.

Overall, this project has strengthened my understanding of what it takes to work on a production, and I’ve come away with a set of real, transferable skills from costume coordination to production logistics, that I can apply to future creative projects. It’s been an invaluable experience, and I’m proud of the work I contributed to the team.
