The readers can see how nervous Gatsby is, which is very unlike his character. The tension is extreme because Gatsby is standing at the front door asked head to toe from the rain because he is so scared. Tom can see this when Fitzgerald emphasizes the tragic glare into his eyes.

When Gatsby and daisy see each other it is clearly awkward and the silence and "sort of choking murmur" emphasizes the tension that is in the room. Gatsby knocks over the clock because of how nervous he is and when he sits back up he described in a uncomfortable way. These physical descriptions and the body language between the two of them shows how awkward everything Is between the two of them, and it even makes the readers uncomfortable.

The conversation between the two of them shows the distance and how they both do not know how to act. Fitzgerald specifically adds in how Gatsby knows the exact date of when they last saw each other. This shows how long Gatsby has waited for this and now it is finally happening, but he does not know what to do.

Gatsby has always been very calm, cool and collected but in this scene we see an awkward and uncomfortable tension between Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby is not able to be his usual self until Tom snaps his out of this. Gatsby specifically readjusts himself and heads back in with his normal self ready to talk to Daisy. Someone needed to say this to Gatsby because the weird positions and silence was hard to read, and this ultimately makes the reader feel relived when Nick addresses this.
