The book Love Does, by Bob Goff, is a comical story about adventure, failure, and of course, love. Goff takes us on his journey through life. He tells many stories ranging from early childhood to where he is now, relating each story back to his relationship with God. He travels to numerous countries and cities and leaves good impressions on everyone he meets.

I rate this book five stars. After reading it I feel more humble and wiser. Goff teaches real life lessons through real life experiences that he's had. Even though I have never met Goff in person, I feel like I've known him forever. He's a very friendly, personable writer which I believe is draws people into the book and keeps them reading more.

Element #2: Analysis of a Book Review

http://archives.relevantmagazine.com/culture/books/love-does-bob-goff
The book review has nothing bad to say about Love Does. It acknowledges Goff's friendly nature, that if you met him you'd want to "give him a hug instead of a handshake" ("Love Does' by Bob Goff"). The writer of this review says at the beginning of the article that he is a cynical person, but later on he says in this book that he could not find any example of Goff doing anything for himself. He does it all for others or for God. The author also commentates on how Goff is genuinely someone who does for others, and how you can see it in each chapter he writes.

I agree with this book review. I believe that Goff truly gets joy out of doing thing for others. Even the most pessimistic person could get some type of joy out of reading the whole book. I agree with what the author of the review says about how Goff's actions speak louder than his words and that each chapter displays this.

Element #3 - Universal Theme

It's pretty obvious what the universal theme is in Love Does. It is that love does. Goff says it on the very first page as well as the very last. Goff says, "In the end, love doesn't just keep thinking about it or keep planning for it. Simply put: love does" (Goff 1), and then again, "... love does whatever it takes to multiply itself and somehow along the way everyone becomes a part of it. You know why? Because that's what love does" (Goff 215). He mentions the words "love does" many more times throughout the book. In each chapter, he shows readers how love does, and challenges them to show how their love does to others.

Goff's attitude about everything he does is laid back, yet it's also hopeful. He knows how to accept failure with grace but when he succeeds it marks a new chapter for him not only in his book, but in his life. This contributes to the theme because if you're not able to do this, you'll be afraid to do things for others and yourself that show your passion and love. Goff gives advice on how to let go of those fears, but really you'd never need it if you just watched (or read) how he lived for God, others, and himself. In that order.

Element #4 - Character Analysis

One of the characters that impacts Goff the most is his wife, Maria. Every time he refers to her he calls her "Sweet Maria", which shows how much she means to him. She is an example of how Goff's love does. He shares about the type of love he has for Sweet Maria and how it affects him and that, "...it pursues blindly, unflinchingly, and without end. When you go after something you love, you'll do anything it takes to get it, even if it costs everything" (Goff 52).

When Goff and his wife's kids were young, he asked them about their views on world politics and how they thought the countries should get along. They each told him their answers and decided to write all of the leaders of most of the hundreds of countries around the world. They ended up getting twenty nine letters back saying they wanted to meet with the children and talk, so they packed their bags and went to all twenty nine countries. Goff writes, "Sweet Maria and I were just roadies carrying the cameras" (Goff 71). Here, the love they show for their kids will always be remembered by their family and the leaders they were meeting. Without Sweet Maria, none of this would have ever happened and the story couldn't have been put in this amazing book.

I cannot relate to her but I hope that one day I will be able to. Goff says, "For the past twenty five years she's been my muse" (Goff 55). I want to be blessed enough to find someone one day that finds a new type of love because of me. I want to be someone's inspiration and muse one day. I believe that I'm not ready for this at all yet, which is one reason I cannot relate to her.
