Morazán's political career began in Honduras, where he quickly gained recognition for his military prowess. His decisive victory at the Battle of La Trinidad in 1827 cemented his reputation as a formidable leader and the de facto head of the liberal movement. In 1830, he was elected president of the Federal Republic of Central America, a nation comprised of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

During his presidency, Morazán implemented sweeping liberal reforms. He advocated for freedom of the press and religion, promoted secular education, and sought to curtail the power of the Catholic Church. The Fall of the Federation and His Execution
