She is ashamed of who she is and where she lives. People around her like her teachers and friends shame and judge her. Throughout the book we can see Esperanza develop into a may independent person. She finds her own voice and forms her own opinions. In this moment Esperanza and her friends Alicia are talking about how Esperanza lives on Mango Street and how "she is Mango Street" Esperanza firmly says no (which is out of character for her). Alicia says how like it or not she will end up returning to Mango Street. She says that no, how she will never come back to Mango Street, not until someone makes it better for them. This show development for Esperanza. When she met Cathy, she began bragging about how she was related to the queen of France and how her family was going to move back there so they could inherit their share. This made Esperanza jealous of her and wish she had that luxury. She begins writing about her story and how she never wanted to live on Mango Street. This is a repetition from the first chapter of the book except, this time her thoughts are much more mature. This shows the development of Esperanza and her identity. She decides that she will go through with her dream of leaving Mango Street. But instead of never coming back she is going to return and help the less fortunate also leave Mango Street. All the different colors and shapes in the sky represent the different aspects of her identity and all come together to form it. If you were to look at a picture of a sky as Esperanza's personality in the beginning of the book it would have been a plain blue sky with some clouds. This is because in the beginning of the book, Esperanza was immature and doesn't really have her own identity yet. But she soon becomes ashamed and embarrassed again because her mom forgot to buy new shoes with it. She was forced to wear her old everyday shoes. After the baptism, everyone was dancing and celebrating, except Esperanza. Her uncle comes up to her and asks her to dance but she refuses because she doesn't want other people to see her "ugly feet." In the beginning of the book, she would have let this ruin her night, but instead, she overcomes it and ends up dancing with her uncle and enjoying the night.
