  • Seems to have several different layers to her personality, and the greasers and Socs can see different levels of. 
  • Motivations seemed to be to keep peace between the two groups, and bring an end to the rivalry, showed in these quotes: "Cherry sighed. "You two are too sweet to scare anyone. First of all, you didn't join in Dallas's dirty talk, and you made him leave us alone. Aid when we asked you to sit up here with us, you didn't act like it was an invitation to make out for the night." (24) and "Hey, I didn't tell you we got us a spy." "A spy?" Johnny looked up from his banana split. "Who?" 'That good-lookin' broad I tried to pick up that night you killed the Soc. The redhead, Cherry what's-her-name." (72) Especially after her boyfriend, Bob, died, she focused on bringing the groups together. 
  • Personality type is ESFJ-A, the Consul. The Consul is a common personality type among the Socs, as Consuls are, for lack of a better word, popular. They're the cool kids, the cheerleaders and football players. They're social, friendly, and loyal. She was at first aloof towards the boys, as seen in this quote: "She turned around and gave him a cool stare. "Take your feet off my chair and shut your trap." (19), but warmed up to them here: "Suddenly she smiled. Gosh, she was pretty. "You don't look the type. What's your name?"
  • She didn't date Dally was because she wasn't looking for some casual, random fling that would end badly and not mean anything, and she respected the social castes enough to leave the greasers alone, seen in these two quotes: "She looked at me quickly. "I could fall in love with Dallas Winston," she said. "I hope I never see him again, or I will." and "I know," she said quietly, "but we'd better go with them. Ponyboy... I mean... if I see you in the hall at school or someplace and don't say hi, well, it's not personal or anything, but..." 
  • Cherry only wanted peace and good friends. Cherry seems to not only want peace, but need it. The agitation between the two gangs killed her boyfriend, and was ruining her life. She just wanted to be a dreamer, but that was something she didn't have access to, seen in some quotes here "She kind of shrugged. "I could just tell. I'll bet you watch sunsets, too." She was quiet for a minute after I nodded. "I used to watch them, too, before I got so busy..." 
  • Appears to have several weaknesses. She is too worried about her social status, shown here: "I know," she said quietly, "but we'd better go with them. Ponyboy... I mean... if I see you in the hall at school or someplace and don't say hi, well, it's not personal or anything, but...". Social standing is one of the most important things to her, and it interrupts any relationships she might have. Another problem is that she is reluctant to try new things or step out of her comfort zone. Her boyfriend, Bob, was fairly ordinary and mundane, and when she meets Dally at the drive-in. He's dangerous and just teetering on the border of certifiably insane, seen here: "Besides that, I've heard about Dallas Winston, and he looked as hard as nails and twice as tough. And you two don't look mean."
  • Cherry is a Soc through and through, but with an acceptance of the greasers, and her loyalty is not something that can be bought.

A cryptex is a mechanism that you can hide a small papyrus message in, and then close it, and to get it open you have to put in the correct code. If you try to pull it open, a vial of vinegar breaks and dissolves the message. You have to turn the dials one at a time to see each layer of Cherry's personality, and if you try too hard, like Dally, in this quote: "She was mad by then. "I wouldn't drink it if I was starving in the desert. Get lost, hood!" (20), you break the vial and you never get to see what it's really like. But if you get to her real self, that means you know how to handle her, like Johnny and Pony, shown in this quote: "Suddenly she smiled. Gosh, she was pretty. "You don't look the type. What's your name?" (20)

Pony is the main character, who leaves after Johnny murders Bob, and they intend to only leave until everything calms down. But then, he and Johnny save the children from the burning church. Therefore, hero. Shown in this quote: "I picked up a kid, and he promptly bit me, but I leaned out, the window and dropped him as gently as I could, being in a hurry like that." (79) Pony is trying to save the kids, a noble and heroic deed.

    Darry: The foil. Darry acts almost opposite of Pony, and he wouldn't be a greaser if it weren't for his circumstances. See this quote: "I remembered the funeral. I had sobbed in spite of myself; Soda had broken down and bawled like a baby; but Darry had only stood there, his fists in his pockets and that look on his face, the same helpless, pleading look that he was wearing now." (84) Darry was stoic and straight-faced, as opposed to Pony's emotional display.

    Dally: The hotshot. Dally is aggressive, rude, brash, foul-mouthed, and cocky. He has an air of confidence around him that can only come from years of not caring if nobody cares, shown in this quote: ""Oh, my, my"--- Dally looked bored--- "you've got me scared to death. You ought to see my record sometime, baby." He grinned slyly. "Guess what I've been in for?" (20) The innuendo is clear.

    Johnny: The victim. Johnny comes from a bad place, and he's always being beaten. Once he killed Bob,  the string of bad things he was pretty much falling down wrapped him up tight like a Snuggie and didn't let go. Then, in the church, it shoved him into a bag and pushed him down a flight of stairs. See this quote, "He would have run away a million times if we hadn't been there. If it hadn't been for the gang, Johnny would never have known what love and affection are."(11)  Johnny is loved by the group, for the sole reason that he really wouldn't know what affection feels like.

    Soda: The sidekick. Soda is who Pony confides in and is comforted by. When he runs out after Darry hits him, he thinks Soda is the only one he needs. See this quote, showing my reasoning:  "I was sleepy and freezing to death and I wanted to be home in bed, safe and warm under the covers with Soda's arm across me." (46) Pony wouldn't want to be comforted by anyone but someone he likes.

    Cherry: The reluctant hero. Cherry is at first reluctant to join the greasers. But once Pony and Johnny leave, she feels as though she has to, and thus, she becomes a hero. See this quote: "No, it wasn't Cherry the Soc who was helping us, it was Cherry the dreamer who watched sunsets and couldn't stand fights." (73)

It's used to make the storyline make sense. In the book, it says "When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home." Paul Newman was an actor in the mid 1900s. If it was set now, Pony might have had Chris Pratt or Tom Cruise on his mind. And so, the setting is integral. Conflict is used also. Internal conflict is most of it, because it's Johnny and Pony wrestling with whether or not to do something that could affect their lives. See here, in this quote: "I said we're goin' back and turn ourselves in," Johnny repeated in a quiet voice. I was surprised but not shocked. I had thought about turning ourselves in lots of times, but apparently the whole idea was a jolt to Dallas." (73). They had to make a huge decision whether or not to turn themselves in.
