Patient needs to contact physician if they notice any changes in vision.
Pt. with renal failure have increased risk of toxicity. 
It is safe to use for pregnant women and with breastfeeding.

What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Ethambutol?


For all patients taking ethambutol:

  • If you have an allergy to ethambutol or any other part of this medicine.
  • If you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
  • If you have swelling in the eye.
  • If you cannot tell if you have changes in eyesight or you are not able to tell your doctor if you have changes in eyesight.

Children:

  • If your child is younger than 13 years of age. Do not give ethambutol to a child younger than 13 years of age.


Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking ethambutol:

Less common
  • Chills
  • pain and swelling of joints, especially big toe, ankle, or knee
  • tense, hot skin over affected joints

Rare


  • Blurred vision, eye pain, red-green color blindness, or any loss of vision (more common with high doses)
  • fever
  • joint pain
  • numbness, tingling, burning pain, or weakness in hands or feet
  • skin rash

  • What should I avoid while taking ethambutol?


    Avoid taking an antacid containing aluminum hydroxide (Alternagel, Maalox, Mi-Acid, Mylanta, Rulox) within 4 hours after you take ethambutol. Some antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb ethambutol.

- Review and monitor liver function test. Especially with patients who have liver problems.

Patient teaching: Teach patient about the use of antiacids while on this medication. You should take Ethanbutol 4 hours before any anti acid.
-Take medication at the same time each day.
-Continue medication until gone, if you stop suddenly TB could continue to grow and become resistant.

Used with other meds to treat TB. Stops TB bacteria growth. Can be taken with or without food. Taken every day or twice weekly. Daily dose is 750-1500 mg. Twice weekly dose is 2500-5000 mg. Take 4 hours before taking antacids. 
Dosage based on age, weight, medicla condition, and response to treatment. Take at same time and evenly spaced times. Take until meds are done. Side effects: alcohol can cause severe N/V.
