California was admitted to the US as a free state, allowed slavery(but not slave trade) in Washington DC, enacted a Fugitive Act, and more. Sandford was a case that went to the Supreme Court, and was the question of whether a slave is a free man because he lived in a land that prohibited slavery. In the end, Dred Scott was still a slave. But it made the Missouri Compromise seem unconstitutional. In this situation the Supreme Court probably shouldn't have been trusted, because they refused a slave his freedom, despite the odds being heavily in his favor.

The Lincoln-Douglas debates are a series of very famous debates between President Abraham Lincoln and Senator Stephen Douglas. These debates were about how to approach slavery with the expansion of the US. These debates made Lincoln much more popular, while making Douglas much less popular. The Freeport Doctrine was a doctrine that Douglas supported, which stated that slavery could only exist in places where it was wanted, which made a lot of Southerns mad. This hurt his chances of becoming president in 1860. This also helped Douglas because he managed to answer a question from Lincoln by alluding to this.

John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry was an effort to gather enslaved people and raid an armory in Harper's Ferry to abolish slavery. Unfortunately, John Brown's raid was a failure, but he was viewed in the North with great admiration. This raid made Southerns become more uptight and apprehensive, which contributed to the start of the Civil War. John Brown was justified in his plan, though it might not have been the best way to go about the disputes over slavery. The South had to be stopped at one point, but the plan might have worked better if more people and supplies were there. This website has more information.

The Election of 1860 was the election in which Abraham Lincoln became president, and 19th presidential election. There were four nominees running. Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell. Abraham Lincoln won with 180 electoral votes (at least 152 needed to win). The divided political parties led to Lincoln's election because the Democratic Party was very split during this election, and did not vote as a unit due to slavery disputes. This allowed Lincoln to have a greater lead in the voting.

Secession is the term used to describe whenever a group withdraws from a larger entity. It is used mainly in political terms, but can also be used for organizations, military alliances, and unions. Before the Civil War started, a group of 11 southern states seceded from the US and became the Confederate States of America. Secession probably could not have become a long term solution, because there are still people who will mingle with the other group and argue with each other. Trade needs to be performed and there could be families who live in the different unions. Also, the two unions are right next to each other, so it is inevitable that they would start fighting. Confederate forces went to the fort in South Carolina and began bombing the place, trying to take control. The Union fought back, but were ultimately defeated by the Confederate forces. This also marks the time when 4 more states joined the Confederacy. Lincoln wanted to replenish supplies at Fort Sumter, but did not want the North to be viewed as the aggressor. so he sent a naval convoy to the fort to provoke the Southerners to attack. This made the South seem like the aggressor instead of the North, and ensured that the border states would remain loyal to the Union.
