I would say the Civil War Project is a level 4 DOK. The assignment is a level 4 because it is a project-based assignment that requires research, for both sections. In the second section, the additional chosen topic, students are asked to examine and investigate the impact the war had on other prevalent subjects such as the spread of disease, the development of medicine, the role of women in the war, and the development of technology. This opens them up to the idea that events, especially large events like a war or pandemic, have a ripple effect (cause and effect) which can be applied to any event major or minor. They are also asked to view the subject through various perspectives such as that of white soldiers and African American soldiers as well as women and high ranking members of the military. This also encourages them to explore the perspectives of others that have been affected by the events.

It also becomes a transferable skill because it teaches students to do research when they want or need more information and rather than just looking at one source they are encouraged to explore multiple sources.

After reading about Depth of Knowledge and looking at the Civil War Battle Research Project, I think that this assessment is a DOK-4. I think this because it is a project based assessment that asks students to think critically about a civil war battle and another topic of their choice. They are also asked to look at the battle from various points of view to get an overall perspective of the battle from both perspectives. Students will conduct research on their assigned battle and then demonstrate and communicate their learning to the class.
All of the skills (research, presentation, communication) they are using for this assignment are transferable and could be used in other content areas.

I think that there are multiple levels of D.O.K. included on this assignment. Requirements like including the dates, location, and outcomes seem to show a level 1 D.O.K. because they are factual and can be recalled easily. Writing a summary of the battle seems like a level 2-3 to me because you would need to describe how and why the battle happened, along with causes and effects. The rest of the assignment seems like level 4 to me. Researching to find an eyewitness perspective, writing about the impact of the battle on the war, and researching one other topic (like women's role, technology, etc.) all require the student to take the knowledge they've learned and use it in their research on these tasks. The student would need to relate their topic to the war and transfer their knowledge of the war to that other topic.

I think the Civil War assessment focuses on a few levels of rigor based on Webb’s DOK. Specifically levels 1 and 4. The facts and concepts needed to be covered with the chosen battle and other topic of the Civil War references level 1 of the DOK. Students must identify who, what, where, and when “information” on a specific battle through a means of writing and presenting, this relates to level 1 of the DOK. Students’ answers to these questions are either correct or incorrect as they are conducting research on specific topics. The assessment also focuses on level 4 of the DOK as students are asked to conduct research and provide evidence of their findings while also analyzing the subject through multiple perspectives. This type of work requires students to extend their thinking in deeper ways and takes more time. Throughout their research students will most likely be thinking critically about the impact the information they found, regarding their chosen battle and other topic, has on the Civil War. Level 4 usually involves more in depth thinking and time while being carried out through a means of project-based learning, which the Civil War assessment requires. Students are also taking part in analyzing and synthesizing information from multiple sources throughout their research. I think this assessment plays a big role in allowing students to think critically and extend their thinking deeper within learning about the Civil War.

When looking at the Civil War assignment with a DOK lens I initially thought that it was a pretty deep lesson and had to go back to the definitions to see where it might best fit. I guess I finally settled on the fact that it was a great example of how an assignment could reach multiples levels. DOK level 1 having to provide simple facts like dates, places, and officers. Level 2-3 by using a map as well as describing the reasons for the battle and the outcomes. I thought by adding another topic to discuss took the whole assignment to a new level ,DOK 4, as connections would have to be made between the topic and the battle chosen. I also thought that the assignment did a good job of incorporating technology. There were some guidelines to follow along with having to do some research but the assignment also allowed for some individual creativity. All of these things provided an assignment that allowed students to work on skills that could be used in future assignments.

Depth of Knowledge (DOK) is a concept that uses different criteria to explain how "deeply" students must know and understand their learning and how "extensively" they are supposed to apply what they have learned to other situations. DOK uses 4 content areas to explain this. DOK-1 is content driven and focuses on the academic content. DOK-2 looks at how the information can be applied. DOK-3 looks more at making connections and consequences of the knowledge. DOK-4 goes into why the knowledge is beneficial. Depending on the extent students can demonstrate and communicate what they learned, one can establish the level of depth to student's learning. This can also help teachers to challenge students further by addressing these areas during planning.

I would assign the civil-war research project a DOK-3. The reason I chose this level of rigor is because the students are required to acquire knowledge about the battle which is DOK-1. They are required to use MLA citation, primary sources, paragraphs, presentations, which is looking at not just content but also the procedure of the knowledge and I believe this satisfies DOK-2. The students are also encouraged to talk about the impacts of the war, and how it affected the war overall. I believe this is looking at consequences and making connections of the battle to the civil-war, and so I give this work a DOK-3.
