PG162: “She’s lying next to me on the grass, bleeding and not breathing.” In the book Once, the Nazis won. Felix hasn’t found his parents yet. Although he is alive, his friends are dying to the Nazis. PG9 (Last page): “My legs are in shock. The Nazi soldiers pick up their machine guns.” In the teaser at the end of the story, the Nazis are still after Felix and his friends. They are chasing Felix and Zelda up a hill. Both of these text evidence show that the Nazis have won.

In my opinion, the conclusion was satisfying. There was a good ending climax where they fought Nazi officers on a train, Felix and his friends almost died. Felix didn’t find his parents yet but he has letters from them. There is a sequel to this book called “Then”. In that book it most likely answers any questions from Once.

In the book, Felix goes through multiple conflicts in the story. One of the conflicts is reuniting with his parents. Felix was put into a Christian orphanage during the holocaust to stay safe. He has yet to find his parents but is getting closer and closer to reuniting with them. He has gotten letters from his parents and left the orphanage to search for them. This conflict has not been resolved. Another conflict in the story is when a Nazi officer causes havoc in the city. There is a man who stands up to the Nazi officer and grabs Felix’s friend Zelda from the crowd. In the end it turned out to be Barney, someone Felix is friends with from now on. Everyone is safe in the end. This conflict has been resolved. There are many conflicts in the book Once.

Perseverance, Try, try again. Although the Nazis are after Felix, he’s still after his main goal. Felix is still trying to find his parents. He believes they are alive and are out there somewhere. The novel teaches that even if you lost, you should still try again. The novel teaches you not to give up no matter the circumstances.
