D.B.

1) "My brother D.B. was in the Army for four goddam years. He was in the war, too--he
landed on D-Day and all--but I really think he hated the Army worse than the war. I was
practically a child at the time, but I remember when he used to come home on furlough
and all, all he did was lie on his bed, practically. He hardly ever even came in the living
room. Later, when he went overseas and was in the war and all, he didn't get wounded or
anything and he didn't have to shoot anybody. All he had to do was drive some cowboy
general around all day in a command car. He once told Allie and I that if he'd had to
shoot anybody, he wouldn't've known which direction to shoot in. He said the Army was
practically as full of bastards as the Nazis were. I remember Allie once asked him wasn't
it sort of good that he was in the war because he was a writer and it gave him a lot to
write about and all. He made Allie go get his baseball mitt and then he asked him who
was the best war poet, Rupert Brooke or Emily Dickinson" (chapter 18; sorry, my pdf does not have page numbers).

2) In this quote, and some other situations before, we find out that D.B. is Holden's brother. And we also find out that the World War II, which is why they are talking about the army, had a big impact a lot of those involved in it. And D.B. lying on his bed, mindlessly staring at the screen portrays the mental effects this war had as well.

3) This quote specifically doesn't really reveal much about Holden but definitely shows some skepticism: what is Holden upset about?

Mr. Spencer

1) "He was always yelling, outside class. It got on your
nerves sometimes. The minute I went in, I was sort of sorry I'd come. He was reading the Atlantic
Monthly, and there were pills and medicine all over the place, and everything smelled
like Vicks Nose Drops. It was pretty depressing. I'm not too crazy about sick people,
anyway. What made it even more depressing, old Spencer had on this very sad, ratty old
bathrobe that he was probably born in or something. I don't much like to see old guys in
their pajamas and bathrobes anyway" (chapter 2).

2) Well, Holden definitely makes a strong comment about Mr. Spencer's looks, especially about what he is wearing. His "sad, ratty old bathrobe," portrays him as a very sick, but sick because of old age, individual. He also felt "sorry" that he came because he was interrupting a day of an old man.

3) I think this quote definitely reveals the judgmental nature of Holden, and the different thoughts and personalities he has around different people. Later on, Mr. Spencer also shares his opinion about Holden, one of the very first adult opinions about him, and that allows the readers to understand his character even more.

Robert Ackley

1) "He started walking around the room, very slow and all, the way he always did,
picking up your personal stuff off your desk and chiffonier. He always picked up your
personal stuff and looked at it. Boy, could he get on your nerves sometimes. 'How was
the fencing?' he said. He just wanted me to quit reading and enjoying myself. He didn't
give a damn about the fencing. 'We win, or what?' he said" (Chapter 3).

2) In this quote, and descriptions a few sentences previous to this quote about Ackley, we can definitely sense that Holden dislikes Ackley. He has pimples all over his face, and he has this desire to pick up others' items without permission and leave it at the wrong place after. I personally hate it when others touch my things without permission, and I can definitely tell that Holden dislikes this as well. Therefore, this quote portrays the rude, inconsiderate behaviors of Ackley.

3) I think this quote highlights the attentive and careful attributes of Holden. Holden seems to scan people top-to-bottom and attentively watch their actions and comments on them. This is the reason why the readers are able to grasp such a clear image of each character.

Stradlater

1) "'Yeah?' Stradlater said. That really interested him. About the booze hound running around the house naked, with Jane around. Stradlater was a very sexy bastard. "She had a lousy childhood. I'm not kidding.'
That didn't interest Stradlater, though. Only very sexy stuff interested him. 'Jane Gallagher. Jesus . . . I couldn't get her off my mind. I really couldn't. 'I
oughta go down and say hello to her, at least.' 'Why the hell don'tcha, instead of keep saying it?' Stradlater said" (chapter 4).

2) Here, Holden reveals that Stradlater is obsessed with "sexy stuff," and later, in chapter 7, Holden furthers his description by mentioning how good he is at having sex. This definitely makes it distinct to the audience his mindset and his appearances as he does get his actions in often.

3) I think here is where I started to doubt Holden just a little bit. Holden seems to not deal with average people and adds a little MSG to the descriptions he gives. Sometimes he exaggerates to grasp attention. Perhaps, Stradlater rather is an average male with average desires---not as bad as Holden says.

Jane Gallagher

he''1) "It was raining like
hell and we were out on her porch, and all of a sudden this booze hound her mother was
married to came out on the porch and asked Jane if there were any cigarettes in the house.
I didn't know him too well or anything, but he looked like the kind of guy that wouldn't
talk to you much unless he wanted something off you. He had a lousy personality.
Anyway, old Jane wouldn't answer him when he asked her if she knew where there was
any cigarettes. So the guy asked her again, but she still wouldn't answer him. She didn't
even look up from the game. Finally the guy went inside the house. When he did, I asked
Jane what the hell was going on. She wouldn't even answer me, then. She made out like
she was concentrating on her next move in the game and all. Then all of a sudden, this
tear plopped down on the checkerboard. On one of the red squares--boy, I can still see it.
She just rubbed it into the board with her finger. I don't know why, but it bothered hell
out of me" (chapter 11).

2) In this quote, Jane's personality isn't really revealed, but we can definitely sense this emotional wall she set up against Holden, limiting Holden's ability to get past a certain stage. She never really "gives in" in a way even when the couple are having sex. This makes her a mysterious character.

3) Holden in this scene continues to say he'll come to down to say hello, and then wants to call her later in New York, and overall, he is just very indecisive in the things he does. He also is very passive and is not able to go straightforward even to his personal feelings.

Allie

1) "But it wasn't just that
he was the most intelligent member in the family. He was also the nicest, in lots of ways.
He never got mad at anybody. People with red hair are supposed to get mad very easily,
but Allie never did, and he had very red hair. I'll tell you what kind of red hair he had. I
started playing golf when I was only ten years old. I remember once, the summer I was
around twelve, teeing off and all, and having a hunch that if I turned around all of a
sudden, I'd see Allie. So I did, and sure enough, he was sitting on his bike outside the
fence--there was this fence that went all around the course--and he was sitting there,
about a hundred and fifty yards behind me, watching me tee off. That's the kind of red
hair he had. God, he was a nice kid, though. He used to laugh so hard at something he
thought of at the dinner table that he just about fell off his chair. I was only thirteen, and
they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in
the garage" (chapter 5).

2) Holden is definitely devastated over Allie's death and portrays him as a glorious kid that simply didn't have any flaws. And we can also see that he Was very innocent when he was dead, as Holden describes him as a "kid" for the first time. Being a "kid" definitely means that he was not involved in any activity that relates to adulthood, mainly sex that a lot of character constantly mention.

3) Here, we learn that Holden loved Allie so much, and in a way, Allie was the angel protecting him and keeping him in touch with the world. But now, with his death, Holden shatters that shell and changes. He idolized Allie when he was alive.
