I understand Sunil is doing what he can to survive and has little to no other options. He is able to support himself with becoming a thief. However, it may not be worthwhile for Sunil when/if he gets caught by the police. He mentions he was beat before. The police do not treat the Annawandians well.

He has enough to eat that he even grows, has extra money to buy the earring and he enjoys sitting on the roof of the building were he steals supplies and looking at the airport, the hotels, and Annawadi.

I do think that becoming a thief was worthwhile for Sunil because he was able to provide for himself and his sister in an economic situation that was externally caused. Sunil was doing his best to provide for his family under conditions that he could not plan for (global economic crisis and terrorist attacks impacting income). He's acting almost as his own social security system in the way the government does not (stealing helps him in these times the way unemployment benefits could)

I do think that becoming a thief was worthwhile for Sunil because he was able to grow stronger and taller and into more of a "man" which is important for him to be in the slum so that he can fight for and provide for himself and his family. This is a very specific circumstance where I think he is making the most of his situation, I would typically not deem stealing to be okay or worthwhile.

Although it breaks Sonu's and even Sunil's own moral code, Sunil's transition to becoming a thief vs. remaining a scavenger is an adequate way for him to get ahead in a declining, harsh economy. His new profession also allows him to thrive economically rather than solely subsisting like he had been doing previously. Now that his confidence has returned, he may go on to do things better than stealing, but temporarily it is a helpful way to move up the Annawadi hierarchy and maybe even some day leave the slum.

I think that stealing was worthwhile fro Sunil. In his position, he is trying to provide for himself and have a healthy life ahead of him. With the economic downturn, that becomes much more difficult. By becoming a thief, he is able to make a decent amount of money even during these hardships, helping himself and his sister.

This is also good especially because he is earning a good amount while the values were dropping and the economy was pretty harsh.

I believe becoming a thief is beneficial for Sunil because it seems as if he was already at rock-bottom, well except for being in jail, so it wasn't the worst option for him. However, I think that this work has to be only temporary, because not only is it risky, but it can be repetitive system and after many years of stealing the police will most likely catch him. His goal needs to be to get him to a point where he will have enough money to potentially remove him from the slum, or to somehow reenter the education system in order to find a low middle class job so he can begin to escape poverty.
