A non profit organization founded by doctors, lawyers, and social service professionals, many of whom are associated with Amnesty International, a human rights campaign organization (CCVT). The founders of the organization had begun to see survivors of torture beginning in 1977, as many of them were attempting to claim refugee status in Canada (CCVT). In addition to asylum, these refugees would benefit greatly and maybe required medical treatment, counselling and legal assistance. This encouraged them to create CCVT in 1983.

The objectives of this organization is to help anyone who is a victim of invasion of their human rights, more specifically from torture and trauma. One way CCVT has taken action is by creating its own programs to help people. It provides mental health services, such as psychotherapy and PTSD treatment, to survivors’ groups and peer counselling (CCVT). They have also created classes for language and skills training, to help immigrants with easier transfer. Mentorship for Youth takes special care for even the youngest victims of conflict (CCVT). All of these programs are CCVT donating their time and money into a better life for others. While doing this they also take action by educating people. They provide training to other organizations that work with torture survivors, workshops for refugee sponsors. Their public education goals aim to raise public awareness of torture and organized violence, improve the services available to survivors, and expand the network of social service agencies working with survivors of torture, in Canada and all around the world (CCVT). You can donate to their organization here:

This organization has many success stories, one is Anthony F., a citizen of Uganda, who lost his father to HIV AIDS (Young). He applied for refugee status in Canada and once accepted, he didn't know what to do, had no experience, had never seen so many white people (Young). He was introduced to CCVT, where he attended counselling sessions (Young). They helped him with school, workshops, and has given him courage in Canada. They have been there to help him succeed and motivate him. Now he is determined to find his place in Canada, a nation of opportunities.

Is CCVT and organizations like it still considered an agent of change if it does not succeed in its objectives?

If people are being helped by CCVT, they have been doing their job well, helping people rehabilitate and find their place in Canada and supporting them mentally and in any way they can. It is attempting to bring about change in the community as it is donating, educating and communicating, all criteria for activism. Even if they do not succeed in helping people, they are still considered agents of change as that is the purpose of the organization.
