Battle of Okinawa, 1st of April - 22nd of June 1945

Okinawa was a significant strategic location in both the Japanese defence of the home islands, and the US offensive island hopping campaign. Because of this the battle for control over the island was heavily contested, the Japanese fiercely fighting to hold the strategic location. The battle itself lasted for almost 3 months, resulting in 90.000 Japanese casualties, about 80% of their initial fighting strength, and similarity 80.000 allied casualties. These high casualty numbers were mostly due to the rugged terrain of Okinawa, consisting largely of fierce mountains that favoured Japanese guérilla tactics.

The Japanese were already losing the war at this point, being continuously weakened in battles, leading to the allies gaining naval superiority, with 12 total fleet carriers along with approximately 1000 airplanes in contrast to Japans lack of carriers and any naval presence in the battle. ( Japan, 10 ships, mostly destroyers - Allies, ~200 ships) Thus, the naval superiority can be argued to have lead to allied victory in the battle of Okinawa, which was significant as they now controlled a critical offensive point, and wreaking the Japanese defence.

The battle caused so many allied casualties, due to fierce Japanese fighting, which has been argued to have led to the use of nuclear weapons to put an end to the Pacific war, as Truman did not want to spend more manpower to invade the home islands, an estimate at around 1.000.000 further casualties and a prolonged war.

Thus, the battle of Okinawa caused the dropping of atomic bombs.

June 19-20, 1944

Known as "the greatest carrier battle of the war" the battle of the Philippine sea was a very significant battle in the Pacific war, as it was a great victory for the Americans and an embarrassing loss to the Japanese. This was because there was a very disproportionate ratio of Japanese to American losses. Japan lost a total of 200 aircraft and 2 carriers on the first day alone contrasting the 100 aircraft the Americans lost. This battle changed how war was conducted in the final stages, as it was the last carrier-to-carrier battle of the war.
