It is worn during special occasions as an accessory to the traditional ‘iro’ (a wrap-around skirt) and ‘buba’ (a loose fitting blouse). Gele is usually made out of heavy or stiff fabric that can be wrapped and molded into a specific shape. Fabrics from Switzerland and Austria are very popular, but the most popular and indigenous to the Yoruba is the ‘aso oke.’ Aso oke is originally a ceremonial fabric woven locally in Nigeria and is made up commonly of strands of cotton and/or silk. Aso oke is also used to make iro and buba, but generally for very special occasions such as the bride’s wedding dress.

Today, the gele, much like Nigerian traditional culture, has been revamped and celebrated. An explosion of creativity, combined with our innate cultural pride means that women are treating the gele not just as an accessory but sometimes as the main focus of their attire. Gele now comes with scalloped edges, laser-cut designs, hand-beaded, two-tone effects, Swarovski encrusted, hand-painted, embroidered, sequinned, and any other design aesthetic you can dream up. Gele tying is now a service provided by most makeup artists and/or salons in Nigeria or Nigerian communities across the world.

The gele is becoming more and more significant. As more Nigerian women take pride in their culture and traditions, the attire becomes a huge part of their lifestyle. Nigerian women take great pride in their appearance, and the gele is their crowning glory. The gele can be outlandish or demure, depending on who is tying it and for what occasion it is being worn. Education in Costa Rica is divided in 3 cycles: pre-education (before age 7), primary education (from 6-7 to 12-13), and secondary school (from 12-13 to 17-18), which leads to higher education. Costa Rica's literacy rate is 96%. Since 1869, public education in Costa Rica is free and mandatory. The educational system is ranked 32nd in the world, the highest in Latin America.

Costa Rica is very kid-friendly, and babies are almost like public property. Everyone is willing to lend a helping hand, but they also have their own opinions on how to raise your child. They place a great importance on friendship and loyalty towards their friends and family. In Costa Rica culture, the family is the basic element of society. Many young people stay living with their parents even after entering college or becoming financially independent.

Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion in Costa Rica. On August 2 every year, there is a nation-wide celebration in honor the national patron saint, Our Lady of the Angels. Costa Ricans make a pilgrimage to the saint’s eponymous cathedral in Cartago, the Basilica de Los Angeles, to ask for the saint’s support or guidance and pay their respects. Many churches hold celebrations to honor their local saints as well. These celebrations are also charming festivals that serve to unite their communities.

Costa Ricans' median age at first marriage is twenty-one for women and twenty-four for men. Premarital sex, expected of men, has become more common for women. Divorce and separation are frequent. Many upper-class men maintain mistresses and second families. The National Child Welfare Board garnishes wages of men who fail to pay child support and blocks them from traveling abroad.

As Catholics by tradition, Costa Ricans believe the soul leaves the body at the moment of death so the deceased needs to be left alone to decompose. Embalming is rarely done, so immediate internment is necessary. Bodies may be stacked in graves and later moved to accommodate more bodies.

The Judicial Branch (Poder Judicial) of the Costa Rican government is made up of the Supreme Court, Appellate Courts and the Trial Courts, which are charged with the administration of justice. The administrative rules for the judicial branch are set forth in the Ley Organica del Poder Judicial.

Human rights in Costa Rica predominantly stem from the UNDHR, the Costa Rican Constitution and the Inter-American Human Rights System. Women's, children's and refugee's rights are all upheld in Costa Rica. LGBT rights have improved substantially over recent years.

The commonly used phrase literally means "pure life." Costa Ricans use pura vida for hello and goodbye and to express their happiness. It can also mean “no worries.”
Embrace and compliment Costa Rica's progressive reputation
Most Costa Ricans you encounter certainly will. Costa Ricans are proud of the fact that they have more teachers in their country than police officers. Costa Rica has the highest literacy rate in Central America. In fact, Costa Rica has traditionally elected former teachers to the presidency.
Use your Spanish, no matter how limited your speaking skills are
Costa Ricans respect the effort, and they will be friendlier with you if you at least try to speak their language.

Public displays of affection
Costa Rica can be a very romantic country, but try not to be overly affectionate in public. Excessive public display of affection between adults is frowned upon in Costa Rica.
Bathing nude at the beach
Also, wearing bathing suits away from the beach, on the street or in restaurants/stores, is not acceptable unless at a resort – respect local customs.
Picking plants, hunting seashells, or damage trees and flowers
In Costa Rica, vegetation is strictly protected by the government and it could be the equivalent of a felony if you are caught disturbing the flora and fauna.

The impact this assignment had on my was inspiration. Learning about other cultures makes me feel closer to other humans on the planet and reminds me that we all share humanity but the way we participate in it is so vastly different.
