I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and my religion is a big part of my cultural views. My religion affects not only my behaviors, wearing modest clothing, abstinence until marriage, etc. It also affects my speech. As with most religions there are specific words and phrases that I use on a daily basis that others known but may not fully understand contextually. This includes things like missionaries, mutual, baptism by immersion, BYC, MTC, etc. These all include words that are common in the English language but people outside of this specific religion may not fully know what they mean.

I am a feminist and I find the continued fight for equality to be of immense importance. This specific culture is one that means a great deal to me. I believe that gender of a person has nothing to do with their worth or potential. It also affects the way that I talk to and interact with others. Because I am a feminist I like to make my strength and potential as a woman known to others.

I am a self proclaimed nerd and I love attending conventions and meeting people who also love the same nerdy things as me. This specific culture had made me who I am by affecting the way I view the world. I tend to look at the world as very black and white. Because people in comics and movies tend to be either good or evil I have a hard time not viewing those in the real world with the same parameters.

I was born and raised in the United States of America. Because of this things like eating a large meal and talking about my blessings on the fourth Thursday in November; or every 4th of July I eat barbecue and watch a fireworks. These things are traditions that may seems odd to an outsider but are a big part of my life and culture as an American citizen.

Marching Band

When I was in high school I was a member of my school's marching band. Marching band is an activity that has a very specific culture even different than a regular concert band. While it is an activity that requires competition it is unlike the competition of traditional sports. In marching band everyone was a friend, even members of competing bands. This culture of kindness and friendship with competitors has made it easier for me in my adult life to make friends, or least amicable acquaintances, with people that have differing views or opinions than me.
