How important formative learning is in the classroom - especially task based rather than ego based. This will be a slow process where teachers take this on on their own terms. I think it's incredibly important for my teaching so that I can tailor lessons to where my students are at.

I teach adult learners in a specialist subject so this was interesting reading as it covers an area of teaching I am not experienced in - the school classroom. My learners have an extrinsic motivator to being at my sessions which means that the issues raised by this article are somewhat irrelevant.

However the interest lies in the comparison of the formative assessment being of importance. In my specialism (nursing) both formative and summative assessments are used as the markers for all nurse training. Feedback is imperative for learners to know if they are on the right track, or to highlight any areas where support is needed - interesting to consider the parallels within mainstream education.

For me the main takeaways were:

- How important formative assessment is for progression, attainment and engagement

- How the structure and feedback system of formative feedback are critical in the impact

- Formative assessment can be critical in raising standards in the classroom and essentially as well as encouraging effective learning.

-There are some key things that can be done to improve formative assessment:
- pupils should be trained in self assessment.
- Should be opportunities for pupils to express understanding
-Discussions should not overly lead students
- Frequent short tests are better than long tests
- Quality feedback and assumption of teachers critical.
