About My Exceptional Child

My exceptional child’s name is Evan he is the youngest of my four children. Evan is 12 years old in the 7th grade. He is a young man who has been diagnosed with dyslexia. His father and I notice the signs of learning difficulty in kindergarten. No matter how hard Evan tried or how much we worked with him he could not memorize spelling words, hated to read and to this day he has a hard time writing a sentence. Due to him excelling in other subjects and him reading at grade level whenever he was tested, teachers continued to suggest that he was just lazy. We tried to include more reading games online, have him write about some of his favorite things sports and video games. Not only didn’t not want to write about these things he would put no effort into reading about them either. I requested to have tested in 3rd grade but unfortunately it way unable to happen due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Once he finally got back into in person Evan was in the 5th and once I finally met with resource them they suggested that since he was so busy, and they didn’t back to us until spring semester due back log situation. The suggestion was to we should start with 504 plan and refer to the middle school. Unfortunately, and fortunately Evan we saw no improvement due to his teacher being incredible and she had already made the accommodation available and more naturally into their classroom activities. With Evan on his way to middle school I began to become anxious and started to seek out my own help for an explanation of his challenges. My research was a success when I was able to find a place to get Evan assessed. In July of 2022 right before 6th grade was scheduled to begin in August 2022 I took Evan to Lights On Learning Solutions in Redondo Beach, California/ Dyslexia | Lights On Learning Solutions | Redondo BeachIt was a wonderful experience Evan was extremely nervous of what to expect and I didn’t know to explain other than, telling the lady was going give him a test. The assessment took about 3 hours, but Evan enjoyed the lady Kris Eller had a lot of patience. She made him calm and allowed him to talk as much as he wanted sharing his thoughts and asking questions. In about a couple weeks I received the diagnosis dyslexia. We also found that Evan suffers more from Dysgraphia the most. Dysgraphia appears in childhood, it’s usually the result of a problem with orthographic coding. This is an aspect of working memory that allows you to permanently remember written words, and the way your hands or fingers must move to write those words.

Ø How does it feel to be the parent of your child? Most days I feel hopeless. I am unaware how to help my son with his difficulty with his writing skills. Not knowing how to help him makes it harder to encourage him it will be alright.

Ø How is your child the same and different from other children at that various age? My son Evan is the same as other typical kids in developmentally. The way Evan is different from other kids developmentally is the way his brain codes and decodes words, letter sounds, and the way he prints the alphabets on paper.

Ø What professionals or agencies do you deal with? At this time, I am looking to get him tested at his middle school through L.A.U.S.D.

Ø What services are available to you and your child? Presently he has 504 plan on file at school to help with him being a very active child.

Ø How did you find out about the above services? I found out about the 504 plans at his elementary school in 2021 when he was in the 5th grade.

Ø What financial burden if any are you experiencing? Fortunately, exceptionality has caused me no financial burden so far.

Ø What other information do you want to share? Evan is the most humble helpful child his age he is joy to be around, but like his mother he my talk your ear off.
