We are now just finishing up our WW1 unit. A big portion of our learning was about people disagreeing with what was going on during this time. Some important people that had an unpopular say about the war were Eugene Debs and Charles Schenck. They gave speeches about their opinions on the war but the government didn't like what they were saying. So they jailed them and we were to determine whether if it was a good decision to jail them or not. We also spoke about if they were Patriotic or Anti-American. Attached is actor Mark Ruffalo reading the speech Eugene Debs gave.

Gilded Age

This year we have learned about the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age was a time where the working class was getting taken advantage of but it was being covered up with money and other things. In this unit we were taught about child labor, the homestead strike, ellis island immigration, the mines, etc. For child labor we were to choose pictures of child labor, make a caption and use hashtags. (Example attached). From the information we were given we were to decide whether the people in charge were Robber Barons or Captains of industry. During this unit to demonstrate how people were getting taken advantage of we did a little experiment. We had 5 different people build paper airplanes with the same type of paper, same size, same amount of time, and however they wanted to make them. We then tested their airplanes and whoever took the shortest amount of time and the best flying airplane won. Then Mr. Wiegman took that idea for his own and basically didn't need that "worker" any longer he could higher someone cheaper.

During the Progressive Era we learned about people called Muckrakers. Muckrakers are people who publish stories that people never know about and that others hope people won't find out about. We were to choose a progressive muckraker and make a news video outlining their work. We learned about prohibition and in the end we just summarized why it had failed.

The civil rights unit seemed to be one of the longest units because we learned a lot in this unit. We learned about Jim Crow, Supreme Court, CORE, Freedom Rides, Farm Labor, etc. While learning about the freedom rides we mapped the route and what happened at each stop.
