A soft knock comes from the door, so she pauses from what she is working on and shifts her attention upwards. “Come in.” she says calmly. The door opens slowly to reveal a boy who seemed to be lost in thought. He walked into the office a few feet before stopping and nervously looking toward the ground. “Please feel free to take a seat. What is your name?” “Joseph” the boy replied in a weak, jittery voice as he headed to a chair. Ashley gently questioned Joseph about what was troubling him. “Well, Ms. Vorberger...” the boy paused and looked back to the ground, once again entering deep thought. At a young age, she was exposed to the effects alcohol and drugs can have on a person. She knew that something was wrong with her dad, but just could not comprehend what was happening at the time. The situation would continue to worsen until, at the age of seven, her dad would pass away. After a bit of therapy and mental growth, Ashley would come to accept what had happened; she did not let her personal situation bring her down. As she went through school, she was always seen as the person who was friends with everyone. She always had a uniquely positive mindset and would always be there when her friends were in need. Ashley was someone you could depend on. While taking a psychology class in high school, Ashley noticed how relatable her teacher was. He also he been going through some personal issues, however, he always came to work with a positive attitude and willing to help his students. Not only had she been naturally interested in the class because of the situation with her father, but this special connection with her psychology teacher truly helped spark her interest in the subject. From that point on, Ashley decided that she wanted to understand what people like her dad experience when they suffer from an addiction. While there were benefits to college, there were also undeniably drawbacks as well. Ashley had her fair share of long days, but always made sure to turn in all her work, begin studying earlier for exams, and go to tutoring sessions for help with her coursework. Afterall, she had her mind set on what she wanted for her future. She absolutely could not give up now. As she put more thought into what job she wanted, Ashley kept thinking about how much she enjoyed being around children. She concluded that a job where she could help children in need would be the best fit for her. Throughout her college years, she would frequently have these kinds of conversations with her advisor. It turns out that these conversations were well worth it. Not long after graduation, her advisor found her a job at a local company that specializes in mental health. With her advisor's recommendation, advanced academic performance, and stellar interview skills, Ashley got the job as an intern. While she was doing well for herself, Ashley was not completely satisfied with her job. It was true that she had an interest in the processes of the brain, which was what her job dealt with, but she wanted to become more specialized in her field. She had clients of all ages, however, deep down she knew that her passion was to help children. She wanted to be there to support children that might be having a hard time at home or those who are being affected from their own mental health problems. With the proper guidance, she could help save them from developing bad habits later in life. Luckily, it wouldn’t be much longer until her efforts would begin to be noticed. Ashley received a job offer for a psychology position dealing specifically with children and adolescents. It was a troubling decision though, as she would have to move several hours away from her home. Ashley’s family and friends encouraged her to take the job since it was exactly what she wanted to do. Over a several year period, she was able to get hundreds of kids the help they needed to live a proper and enjoyable childhood. Throughout the months after Joseph’s visit to her office, Ashley was able to connect both him and his dad to the resources they needed to ensure their safety. Ashley makes it very clear that she does not do her job for the money.
