When Jonas is reading his instructions, they tell him, “You may lie.” In other words Jonas was told for the first time that lying would be a part of his job. The author is trying to make us see that when we make white lies in our lives we don’t think about it, but in Jonas’s world lying is unusual. He hasn’t ever lied and it’s hard to wrap his head around the entire concept of it. This quote moves the story forward by showing us how Jonas is scared. It’s not natural for him to lie and he doesn’t really know how. He also doesn’t really want to lie; it doesn't feel right to him.

However, when he read the instructions, one part of it said, “You may lie". In other words, Jonas is given the option to lie if he wants to, and any rules regarding language precision are now tolerated. The author is trying to make us see that the community is not as it seems to be, and is full of people who lie, and deceive people that this is a utopia. This quote moves the story forward by showing us how Jonas changed his perception about the community.

In other words, This quote means that Jonas will now be able to lie when he wants and isn’t obligated to tell the truth anymore. The Giver and Jonas (the receiver) are the only ones in the community that are allowed to lie. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas was presented with the opportunity to lie now that he is the receiver. The author is also trying to point out by the reaction that Jonas gave that he has never broken any of the community's rules so now that he is presented with the opportunity he doesn't know what to make of it. This quote moves the story forward by showing us that if Jonas does decide to use his ability to lie it will cause new conflict in the novel, maybe by him taking advantage of his new privilege.

Also that his assignment is so important that he keeps it secret, he could break one of the biggest rules in the community. The author is trying to show us that there are a lot of things that the community is hiding from Jonas and us the reader, and that things being said to Jonas may not be fully true. This quote moves the story along by making Jonas think more about his community and how perfect it really is.

The author is trying to make us see that the receiver’s job is extremely important, and it allows him to be above certain rules that are cornerstones of the community. This quote moves the story forward by showing us the new privileges and responsibilities of being the receiver. This also created a new conflict, because Jonas was convinced that lying was always wrong, and he was confused that this could be allowed.

The instructions of the receiver of memory documents was telling Jonas he was allowed to lie. Jonas had been assigned to be the receiver of memory and was given instructions and in the instructions “You may lie. was said to Jonas. The quote means Jonas is allowed to lie because of the fact that normal citizens in the community or not allowed to lie. He is allowed to cause he isn’t allowed to tell anyone about his training and maybe might need to lie about why he is tired or hurt.
This quote means to me that It would be pretty hard to just not lie in a society like that and the fact that Jonas is the only person that can lie is crazy. When Jonas got the instructions for being the receiver of memory inside the instructions were a line that said ”You may lie.” In other words, Jonas got instructions from the person and inside the instructions it said he was able to lie. The author is trying to make us see that it is very surprising and special that he is allowed to lie and not be punished.
This quote moves the story forward by showing us how special and unique the receiver of memory is.

In other words, because of this new job that he was selected for he is able to break the rules that he was taught to obey no matter what. I think the author is trying to make us see that this job is important in a way and is different, because in the story everyone is told to follow the rules and if they break too many rules they will be released from the society, and of course lying is breaking one of those rules. This quote moves the story forward by showing us that Jonas’s character is developing and that his life is changing. And this keeps us intrigued and makes us want to read more.

When he read the rules, he noticed that one of them said “You may lie.”
The author is trying to convey that “what if” factor. As in, what if everyone has lied to Jonas?
By hearing this quote, it is a strong indicator that reveals some foreshadowing. Like, why does jonas have to lie?

In Jonas’s letter, the last rule is that he can lie. Therefore to his other rules “4. Do not discuss your training with any other members of the community, including parents and elders.” and “5. From this moment you are prohibited from dream telling “ he can lie his way out of itIn chapter 9, Jonas and Asher are riding their bikes back home. When he arrives at the dinner table he is greeted with Lily’s chatter about how excited she is. When he gets to his room he reads the rules and starts overthinking about situations that might happen. The quote “ You may lie” stumps Jonas. He has always been truthful because he knows the consequences. Once he started thinking it over, he couldn’t tell if anyone was speaking of the truth. This quote means nothing to me, everyone has told a lie before even if it has been a little meaningless one. The quote “You may lie'' just reminds me of sneakiness and confusion. If everyone were to never speak the truth again it would be complete chaos. When _Jonas reads his job rules_ , his list of rules says “ You may lie.” When Jonas settles down and scans over his list he was given, he finds out that he may lie. In other words, he can lie his way out of situations that include questions about his work. The author is trying to make us see that being the Reciever is a complex and secretive job. This quote moves the story forward by showing us the perfect world we think they live in might not be so perfect.

When Jonas was reading the packet of rules he reads the rules and it says “ You may lie”.

In other words, he is granted to say or see things others can't with his certain job. And he can't tell anyone about what he is doing in training.
The author is trying to make us see that being the new receiver is a very important job, it's different from all the other jobs. Also the author is trying to tell us that this is an important and special job without being punished for lying. The qoute moves the story foward by showing us that the character and or new reciecver Jonas shows how much this job is, it shows that it is unique and interesting.
