In this quote, it truly demonstrates the attitude and strength Mark Watney had during his whole time stuck on mars. Mark had to over come many challenges such as the problem relating to not having enough food until Area 4 came so, Mark decided to 'buckle' down and figure out a solution. Mark chose to not give up and persevere through the problem, and find a way to survive. Perseverance is an amazing lesson in life, which the author Andy Weir portrayed and wrote wonderfully throughout the entire book.

Throughout the entire book, Mark tried to stay positive and keep his sense of humour, this is evident through the book when he tries to make every moment seem like his last. An example of this is when Mark makes the joke “They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially ‘colonized’ it. So technically, I colonized Mars. In your face, Neil Armstrong”. This shows that even in tough times you can keep your sense of humour, and persevere through hard times.

How even though you fail once it’s not a ‘failure’ but could be considered and is a ‘learning experience. An example of this is when Mark tries to make water, to water the potatoes, but instead didn’t consider a crucial factor of the equation. But Mark tried again, and he succeeded and the colonized Mars. Perseverance is all about your mind set, you can look at your personal events as either a learning experience, or you could call it a failure. It is all up to you and the type of mind set you are in.

To just focus on the short term and worry about the long term later. Mark really shows this when he only focuses on one problem at a time and not that he’s stuck desolate planet, called Mars. An example of this is when Mark focuses on trying to grow food (potatoes) on a planet where nothing can grow. Instead of freaking out and thinking about how he is the only one left on Mars, and how the rest of his crew left him there. Mark as a person has earned much respect as a person and an astronaut, because of his perseverance, determines and his will to live. Mark has survived not only because of his skills as a scientist but also his personality and perseverance. An example is when Mark dug up the radioactive material, he trusted his instincts and will to live (his perseverance), instead of the science behind leaving the radioactive material in the ground.
